LCD Replacement

#1 Post by PaulS » Wed Apr 19, 2006 8:03 pm

I just got a quote to replace the lcd on my Thinkpad T40 from an authorized IBM service centre. I was quoted over $1400 CDN to replace the LCD (1400x1050). Is this a reasonable price? A new T43 with better hardware and three year warranty is only $400 more.

My friend's T40p seems to have a brighter SVGA+ screen. Are there different manufacturer's of the LCD screen and which LCD replacement should I get, if possible. I need the FRU's.

Do you mean SXGA+? To my knowledge, they never put a SVGA screen on a T4X Series Thinkpad.

As you didn't post your model#, you will have to check IBMs website for the FRU yourself: http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 46502.html
I think, it's too much. Let's say the display is $750 (USD) shipped, 500 bucks for labor?

Sorry, the SVGA+ was supposed to be SXGA+.

The model was a 237392u.

The FRU for the LCD should be 11P8346 ($434), add a screw kit for $11. With s/h and tax: $487.16. This is retail and USD.

last december during christmas i acccidentally smashed a glass and a piece went straight to my sxga lcd and cracked it. the replacement from IBM UK was £270 which was the cheapest i could find here. After a lot of time and continiously searching on ebay i managed to find my lcd 92p6760 sxga from someone in malaysia brand new unopened for $140. :)

Reasonable? No. Factual, probably. This is a job for eBay.

I'd either buy new and sell old here or on eBay OR find an LCD on eBay and install myself.

One idea is fixing the T40 with a 1024 X 768 LCD and selling it. The low res. screens don't cost too much and you'll fetch at least $600 US if the machine is in good shape.

You could even keep it if you don't mind 1024 X 768.

I would strongly suggest to listen to my opinion:
The listing is here for those who dont believe me. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 6841474106
The one i won was 11p8348 but i asked him if he had 92p6760 and he finally sent me that one which was for t43.The seller is 100% geniue and i am on ebay the last 3years with over 800+ feedback on 2 accounts 100%. Before you rush into buying an xga lcd, ask him if he has the lcd you are looking for, since he has some lcds on sale right now.

I agree that dtakias clearly suggests the best option. I was just offering alternatives...

That LCD for $140 is a no brainer.

I thought the FRU# of the LCD refers to a LCD made by a specific manufacturer. However, the service centre quoted me a cheaper replacement LCD with the same FRU#supposedly made by a different manufacturer.

Sorry, but just to check. Is this what IBM charges for the LCD in the US ? Converted to US currency that LCD sells for about $1110 (without 25% tax!) here. Never buy IBM over here (or in Europe) it seems - what are they thinking ?

If my laptop is under warranty and there is discolouration on the LCD (cloudy spots in two different areas), will it be covered under the standard 3 year warranty?

Same question, and I have the thinkpad protection version of the warranty.

In addition to my two T40's, I have an R51 that had bright spots in either lower corner of the LCD. The screen was replaced (last week) under warranty (depot to Selectron).

The new LCD is perfect, no bad pixels.
