Will this card fit in the Dock II PCI slot?
Will this card fit in the Dock II PCI slot?
I want to get one of these USB & Firewire combo cards, and would like to put it in the PCI slot of my new Dock II. I like this one, and I know that Adaptec makes some, too. Anyone using one?

Hello James...
Hi James...
So you say that the card I linked to would fit? It *looks* a big bigger
than a typical "half height" card, which was why I was worrying.
How do you know it would fit, by the way?

Hi Tim,
Regards,

The Dock II takes a "half-size" PCI card (up to 6.9" - 174mm long), not a "half-height" one.tbessie wrote:So you say that the card I linked to would fit? It *looks* a big bigger than a typical "half height" card, which was why I was worrying.

Thanks!
I just bought the Adaptec DuoConnect card (didn't want to wait to get the other one in the mail). Looks like it will fit fine.
One thing, though, is that you can connect a power cable to this card (for power on the USB and Firewire ports), but there doesn't seem to be any power connector available in the PCI slot in the dock II.
Is this correct? It'd be nice to be able to have added power on that card, if I could somehow do it. Are there any unused power cables or connectors inside the dock one can cannibalize?

You won't need it.tbessie wrote:One thing, though, is that you can connect a power cable to this card (for power on the USB and Firewire ports), but there doesn't seem to be any power connector available in the PCI slot in the dock II.
The Dock II has its own power supply that will provide sufficent power for any devices you attach to the ports.
At least that's been my experience.

Thanks again!
Thanks again for your help -- all my devices that need power (webcam, mostly) right now are attached to a powered hub, so I don't need to worry about it anyway.
Well, now that I've got this all settled, there's not a whole lot more I can do to max out my A31... it's got about everything in it one can do to keep it as fast and usable as possible.
The next step, in a year or do, will be to get a tower... I'm tired of having to go to all these lenghts to expand my machine. It's been educational, at least.

Getting another problem
Well, I tried this card, downloading audio data from an audio device on the firewire port, and using my USB devices on the USB ports, and guess what? The firewire slows to a crawl, then stops, then the USB devices are disabled, then reenabled (by Windows, I guess it thinks they're gone, they lose the signal in the USB ports or something).
Very weird.
Anyone use this card themselves?
I've written to Adaptec. I might just go trade it for another one.

I just picked up two 2877 DockII my A31 (I picked up a local computer surplus for very little I got one for home one for when of at conventions) and I had a thought could I put a PCI WifFI card in to that pci slot? I did test with one card (a Linksy) but I did not have the drivers to see if it was going to work.
I like to see if anyone has done this as well as maybe added a HD to the ultrabay on the docking station ?
thanks

I've found the max size of the PCI card that can fit into the Dock II slot is larger than the manual states. According to IBM, the max length is 174mm (6.9") but I'm currently using a Lonworks SMX control network interface card, which is 190mm (7.5") long and std height. It fits although I have glued a plastic insulator on the end of the card to ensure it does not short against the Dock's chassis.

Re: Getting another problem
hey Tim, i've asked the same question on another thread http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=52026 and got the same result. no infotbessie wrote:Very weird.

at this point, it's more a question of whether the card will work in the dock, not whether it'll fit.

Re: Getting another problem
I would say that the PCI slot will take ANY card that fits as i installed a USB 2.0 card with no problems and I may get some other cards like a PCI wireless card and if Ii can find one eSata card. this is slot and as long as you have drivers and the files to run the card it should work.charlienyc wrote:hey Tim, i've asked the same question on another thread http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=52026 and got the same result. no infotbessie wrote:Very weird.

I've written to Adaptec. I might just go trade it for another one.. i don't know if others use the PCI slot for only video cards or what, but i'm very frustrated.

I would not try to go too large as you do run into problems with metal but if you can see it fitting try it.
