How to add Windows Key on a T41p thinkpad

#1 Post by siut » Fri Jul 30, 2004 10:37 am

I've been using a T41p for a while. One thing that bothers me a lot is a lack of Windows Key on the keyboard. Does anyone know how to program a Windows Key on the keyboard?

If you don't want to install unnecessay junk on your computer, you could just remap one of the keys that you don't use to act as a windows key. A friend mapped his right ALT key as such.

From the FAQ at http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=1689

14) Hey! Where's my Windows key?

IBM realizes that some customers want the Windows key functionality and
provides this utility to create one:

I wish that the IBM PC's (work) keyboard had this feature. I am ALWAYS hitting the !@#$%^& window's key when I'm trying to do "funky" key combo's ("crtl" + "F11" for Oracle, and the like).

Can you tell me how to remap the ALT key to windows key? Does it require me to remove the keyboard and do some rewiring job? Thanks.

No rewiring necessary. As an alternative to the above suggestions, you can also use the following, which modifies the registry and thus uses the XP operating system to remap a key.

- Create a simple text file, ending with the extension .reg, with the following lines in the file. Omit the ===== lines.
- Double click on the file, then reboot.
- This maps the right Ctrl key as the windows key. You'll have to search for the code for the right ALT key.
- To reverse the remapping, put a "-" (without quotes) in front of the line starting with [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\, and run again.
- This only works for WinXP, for Win2k or NT the first line is different. Search to find.

==== Beginning of file ===
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Keyboard Layout]
"Scancode Map"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,02,00,00,00,5b,e0,1d,e0,00,00,00,00
===== End of file ====

Continuing on from XCoalMiner

For the lazy at heart here follows the "LEFT ALT" version for remapping the Windows Key

==== Beginning of file ===
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout]
"Scancode Map"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,03,00,00,00,1d,e0,5b,e0,5b,e0,38,00,\
00,00,00,00

==== End of file ===

I also tried remapping the FN Key, but it seems that it cannot be done?
The scancode is given as 0x163 which I tried swapping with the Left CTRL key 0x1D but unfortunately the system does not respond correctly.

The FN Key is probably Hardware/Bios controlled only. Anyway I am glad that this hack allows for the "IBM Keyboard Configurator" to be removed from memory and subsequently uninstalled.

on my t40p there is a "Keyboard Customizer" utility under the Access IBM menu in my Start-->Programs menu.

I have mapped my right shift button for the windows key, they only reason why i have chosen to do this is b/c i need it for switching desktops.

sorry i needed to justify the reason for mapping that key.
