T41 will not charge, please help

#1 Post by sander33 » Mon Apr 24, 2006 3:36 am

Hi,
I have a refurbished t41 (2373-268) and am facing a serious problem:
it will not charge in ANY way, I have 3 AC adapters and 3 different batteries, I also tried using the port replicator (which has a different connection & AC adapter...) NOTHING!!!
I read somewhere that there might be a problem with the specific BIOS and/or embedded controller so I downloaded them...
Still nothing!

BTW - I cannot return the laptop and I would really like to avoid a $700 service by IBM

Will appreciate any lead!

Thank you,
Ron

If the motherboard is toast and if you do not want to spend $700 for a new motherboard I would try the following.

1. Look for a new board on e-bay and replace it yourself. It will be much cheaper then going through IBM service.

2. There are external battery chargers that can charge batteries. I believe retail price is $119 but cheaper on e-bay.

Thanks for the reply
Do you think its the Motherboard?

I said $700 because I know they will replace the board w/o even chacking... easy and cost efective...

It is a very strange problem, because the system works perfectly, besides the charging issue

I had the same problem on two A31's. It is some part of the motherboard, which will require a new one. Unfortunately, it is hard to find someone that will repair a motherboard. It will also consume a lot of your time to remove then replace - assuming it is fixed the first time.

You could look into buying an extended warranty then having IBM fix it, that should be less than the repair without a warranty.

Here's the link, click on link for post warranty systems (we're all assuming your warranty has expired) -> http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/accessories/se ... kplus.html

Good luck.

Thank you for the info!

Can you tell me the name/position of the part I need to replace?

BTW - it seems that I cant renew/initiate a post warranty procedure, is it for specific models only?

I don't know the answer, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if "refurbished" models are ineligible to extend the warranty.

From this link -> http://www-1.ibm.com/services/us/index. ... 1505/aa010

Q: I have a refurbished IBM machine. Is it eligible for a MA ServicePac?
A: All US released and purchased machines that have NOT reached IBM End Of Service (EOS) dates are eligible for MA ServicePacs.

I am not sure if EOS means out of warranty or just discontinued?

Additionally, if the model is eligable, you have to assoicate it with a business, like your work.

Apparently, both Lenovo and IBM still sell service contracts - extensions and post-warranty. The terms of each differ, as do the prices.

One important feature I discovered is that Lenovo's post warranty contracts begin from the expiration date of the last time the unit was covered. IBM's warranty contracts begin when you register the unit.

Thanks a lot!

However, I'm currently working in London & Tel Aviv and will not be in the US for the next 4 months. It seems that I have tough luck with this laptop

Thanks anyway
