Anodizing Ti Cover? *DIALUP WARNING - PICTURES*

#1 Post by a31pguy » Mon Apr 24, 2006 7:05 pm

Ok - so painting wasn't a great idea. How about Anodizing the Ti cover? I've heard this is actually a lot easier to do.

Actually, can you post a link to pic of the "before" shot? I'd like to see what went wrong with the paint job.

Point of clarification. I never painted it. Researching the issue - paint would wear and scratch off. Anodizing it - depending on the process used is a lot tougher.

I'm thinking of an anodized black, but any color or pattern is available.

It seems easier to just order a new Ti cover and logo sticker to be anodized, then to remove it and wait for it to be anodized.

Although thinking about this - shouldn't IBM have already thought about doing this as a service for CTO orders?

My thoughts on that - were that it exposed the Ti to heat. Didn't he have concerns about warping?

Anodizing is a room temperature process involving electroplating a color to a metal by dipping it in acid while running a current through it. After the metal is finished - it can also be sealed with a clearcoat.

Some people have processes which layer or splash colors in artistic fashions on metal. I was even thinking about having this guy - who create artwork with ti - do a commission.

But I'm not sure if he would have a tank large enough.

I've powder-coated and anodized aluminum but not Ti. The baking during powdered coating shouldn't hurt anything. Actually now that I think about it you may not be able to anodize Ti the color black. I've mostly seen bronze/gold.

Personally if it were me I wouldn't mess with it. Especially if you don't own the equipment necessary.

My advice is to buy an extra Ti cover to experiment with if you are serious about anodizing one.

Titanium is notoriously difficult to work with, however, so I don't know how well anodizing would work.

Oh I would not even think about doing it myself. I would take a new part in for professional finishing and then replace the current one I have on my laptop.

You might be right about black. It may not be an option. These are the colors that I have seen so far.
