Getting the itch to upgrade... from my T40..

#1 Post by simms » Mon Apr 24, 2006 8:15 pm

I've had my T40 for about 4-5 months now and it's been great. My GF needs a new laptop so I could sell/give her mine and convince myself to upgrade.. :)

Anyways, I was looking at an X-series. Think for round 2, I should get an X series, or stick with good old T?

I could probably afford $7-800, so it would be a low end X40 or maybe a highend X30/31 etc.

If I were to upgrade within the T's, I would probably buy a T42.

Thoughts?

What do you need the machine for?

I thought I would like an X when i was upgrading from my T23... I was wrong. I bought an X31 (1.5/512mb/60GB 7k2) and while it was a nice little machine I found it lacking. Battery life was disapointing, audio did not make me happy, and i didnt like the screen resolution. I really hated not having an optical drive or media bay as well, i use it more than i thought.

Just a general purpose machine. I bring it with me daily to school.... I was thinking to try out an X-series for a little while.

Also, my current T-series warranty will expire in about 4 months, so if I picked up another T40-42 with a longer warranty and sold off my current one, that would work.

But those X-series are so small and cool... I guess the resolution and no-optical really kills it.

I use my T40 to play Football Manager (which requires the CD), so I couldn't live without an optical drive. And the screen resolution would really kill the game

with any newer game even daemon wont work, all the copy protection crap on these disks these days prevents it. Further, that takes up quite a bit of HDD space on an already small Laptop HDD, and games will not run well the GMA950 anyhow.

still with the old thinkpad T40 that you have already got.
Just upgrade its hard drive to 7200rpm one. while you could use your $700-800 budget to get a X-series for your gf.
You know. most of the time girls like small laptop which is light and easy to carry with. therefore x-series would best fitting her taste.
Thus, you gf will definitely adding more credit and love you more than ever... :P

cheers... 8)

Or extend your current warranty perhaps (unless it works differently where you live and you can't do that). I'm set on doing that with my T40; it will cost me a sizeable chuck of $$ based on my job earnings, but I plan to have the comp for a fair while yet. And whatever's left over, go with the HDD upgrade and anything else to max your T40 to its limits.

You could use Virtual CD to store the image of CD on your hard drive and access it from there. This you will only need optical drive for installation. It is faster, less power consumption, and less likely to damage your CD.

That's how I use my X24. I never really needed an optical drive after using it. Highly recommend it.
