T41P -2373-GEU or T42 2373-3VU

#1 Post by dd » Fri Jul 30, 2004 4:45 pm

Hi

Narrowed my choice to these 2:

I would like some advice on choosing between the T42 and T41P

T42 2373-3VU

P M 735 1.7ghz, 512MB RAM, 80GB 5400rpm HDD, 14.1 SXGA(1400X1050) TFT LCD, 64MB ATI Radeon 9600, CD-RW/DVD-R Multi-Burner(Slim), Intel 802.11b/g wireless(MPCI), Modem(CDC), 1Gb Ethernet(LOM), UltraNav, Secure Chip(TCPA), 6 cell Li-Ion battery, WinXP Pro

T41P 2373-GEU

P M 1.7GHz, 512MB RAM, 60GB 7200rpm HDD, 14.1 SXGA+(1400x1050) TFT LCD, 128MB Fire GL T2, 16x10x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD(slim), Bluetooth/Modem(CDC), 1Gb Ethernet(LOM), 802.11a/b/g Wireless(MPCI), Secure Chip(TCPA), UltraNav, 9 cell battery, WinXP Pro

I have seen some posts but cant remember if the T42 can be upgraded easily (ie without upsetting warranty) to Bluetooth? Does it come with antenna?

Additionally, will the 128 meg graphics card be so much better than the 64 meg 9600?

Any suggestions would be great

Best Regards

dd

A vote for the T41p. Has IBM wireless, faster HD, 9 cell battery and Bluetooth. Although the CPU is a bit slower, but you won't recognise it, since the faster HD. There is not much difference between the 64MB and 128MB ATI. Both of them are based on the same VPU. The FireGL's driver is optimized for OpenGL applications. In games it means about 2-5FPS less. Installing one of the driver our FAQ mentions will solve the problem. By the way 3VU doesn't have the BT antenna in the LCD. What prices did you get for these models? Are you planning to buy it from Bill? I hope so.

It's not Titanium, but Magnesium. Much better IMO.

Hi G-Man

I have taken the information from JULY 2004 (Version 278) tabook !

For the T41P...........It says:

Case Material: Magnesium composite in the top cover, titanium-reinforced CFRP in bottom cover.

T42 doent seem to mention the Titanium.

Any ideas?

Thanks

As far as I know, the top cover is the same on T40/41/42: it's Magnesium composite. However T40 and T41 have Titanium reinforced carbon fiber plastic cover. T42's bottom is not Titanium reinforced, just cfrp.

Hi ,

I am also hesitating between T42 2373-3VU and T41p. The 2373-3VU
is about $21XX for students from IBM website ( I cant remember the exact price). After seeing the G-man's post, I am leaning toward T41p.
I wish to know how much T41p is. Thanks in advance!

Kenji,

Bill has T41p for $2550. IBM's price is still around $3K.

Quite frankly, I wouldn't be basing whether to get a T41 or T42 on what the case is made of. They're both made of tough materials that will give you years of service. Differences in the technical specs and your planned usage are much more important.

Nonny
Thanks - Youre right.
Yes the Technical specs are highly important...............I was just trying to find out "as-much" about the T41P as I can .............

Titanium does sound nice though..............

Thanks again for all the replies here
