Heat, Fans and Wireless
Heat, Fans and Wireless
I have a T41 2373-1HU with 768Mb of Ram, and I upgraded the hard drive to the 60Gb 7200-rpm drive. I have posted before that this machine runs cool and fast. I never seemed to have the fan issue that has drawn so much attention.
This machine has (had) the Intel 2100 Wireless NIC that did not work reliably. I normally kept it disable. I ordered the IBM 11 a/b/g card and replaced it last night. Also last night I update the Embedded Controller to 3.03. Separately from the machine, I installed a Netopia Wireless Router (3387W-ENT).
Tonight I have it all working with the Netopia "Closed" (Scanners like Netstumbler can't see it - I tried) and with WEP on and working.
After quite a bit of work on wireless including moving data wireless between laptop and desktop, I noticed the fan was running fast blowing hot air. The bottom of the laptop was a bit warmer than normal.
It occurs to me that the active wireless NIC may be using power and generating heat. I plugged in my LAN connection and disabled the wireless without shutting down or resetting the laptop. Within a few minutes, the fan returned to low speed (noticeably quieter) and the laptop appears to be cooling off.
Is is a valid conclusion that an active wireless NIC would generate this kind of heat? ... JDHurst

That was a great comment matt....mattfromomaha wrote:NIC Cards are radio transmitters and receivers. They are definately prone to expelling a lot of hot air (like my ex!)
