z60m/ Notebook N100 core duo/R52...any idea please?

#1 Post by oql » Wed Apr 26, 2006 11:50 am

Hello everybody,
I'm new here and I desperatelly need a laptop(due to my studies)- my first one!!! :D
The machine should work well with statistics/math applications, programming and some GIS, seldom 3D... and maybe some movies, but no gaming...Vista compatibility would be an asset and must have DVD- burner as well, and mobility is still important, but it's a secondary issue.
That's how I've came to three choices, the order is not relevant:
Thinkpad R52, Z60m and Notebook N100 dual core.
The last model is described as having a very flexy lid and not esp. well build, but quite performant and significantly cheaper, while the other are both solid, well configurated and of course expensive.
I would rather choose between the R52 and Z60m, and Z60m being more media- oriented is getting some more points, but...is this a real IBM product? it has the same reliability? for the same money I can buy real Toshiba Tecra M or an even cheaper Toshiba Tecra A5 , both business line notebooks, I cannot decide between this Lenovo thing and another reliable produsent like Toshiba, f.instance...
My heart wants a Thinkpad, but my brain is making me confused(as always   )...
I need the laptop in a couple of weeks, so any idea is more than welcome!!!

Well, Welcome to the Thinkpad Forums :)

Hmmm, sounds like you need a powerful, yet very mobile, system; I, myself, would narrow it down further to just the Z60m and R52. If you aren't using anything that can either benefit from or take advantage of dual core, you probably won't notice a huge leap in performance. The Z60m and the R52 are still "Real" IBM products, if you are referring to the fact that they perform exceptionally well and have excellent duarabilty and robustness. I have tried both and each one is as solid as a rock with no problems; although I haven't tried the N100...I imagine it can't be too different.

Are these your only options or have you looked at the T Series Thinkpads as well?

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

T models

Thanks for you reply, it's true that N100 has lower build-quality that Thinkpad Models.
One of my friends just got a Tp T43(or 42, I don't remeber exactly) and I was impressed, that'a actually what I would like to have, but... he bought thte model from USA and I live in Norway, it's simply too expensive for me right now, bus as I still need reliable laptop, I am looking to the other R and Z models.
The point is that, if the machine has the expected quality, then I will get very attached by it so changing it with another one wouldn't have sense for me for the next three years.
i will have a look to Z60m models tomorrow afternoon, and then I can compare it with R and T models.
I hope to make a good deal by choosing Lenovo :)

I checked out the Z60T at OfficeDepot yesterday - its a nicely built machine, pretty dang light - and wide (which kinda threw me off).

Overall its a nice machine definitely and should handle what you're looking for. The unit I tested ran very well.
