Need help for a quick decision. Return or not return.
Hi,
I just recieved my T60P a few days ago. Frankly I am a bit dissapointed about the noise of the machine. This one does have a FireGL built into it. According to the Fancontrol Program the GPU is running at about 60-64 degrees in IDLE mode. That is just using MS Word or basically doing nothing.
My question to you guys is whether other T60 models with the smaller Radeon cards do have similar problems. At what temperature does your T60 or T60P idle? I mainly brought this one for the good resolution flexview (1600x1200) and I dont really care about graphic performance. So if there is a radeon model with flexview and substantially lower noise, I'd rather buy that one.
Any help would greatly be appreciated, since I'd have to return it within the first 12 days of purchase here in Germany.
The Model is a 93G I believe. 2600 CPU, FireGL, 100B HDD.
Best regards,
Vincent
edit:
anyone with a radeon x1400 built into?
2007-63G seems just the right model to replace this one and its got that one.

Re: Need help for a quick decision. Return or not return.
I have a T60 (see below) that has the X1400 card and it's just fine. Runs quietly and very cool. The flexview at 1400x1050 is very nice.filter wrote:Hi,

The issue I have is that I was told by a very uniformed Lenovo rep (when I called to place my order) that T60P models would not be released until Sep 06. I needed a ThinkPad immediatly so I ordered the T60.
Having since learned otherwize, I found the 2007-96U Core Duo T2600 2.16 1GB 15.0" UXGA 256MB 100G 7200 Combo which is perfect for my needs. I do need the graphics capabilities of this P model as I do OpenGL, Design and other work that is resource intensive, and 1600x1200 is beneficial.
I too and coming up (within days) of the time limit for returning my T60. My hesitantcy is a result of the reports (like yours that I have been reading about the T60P models. My question for you is how did you find the display? Was it bright, clear, and free of stuck or dead pixles?
Likewise I need some help because I've got to make the decision of returning the T60 for a T60P or just keep the one I have?filter wrote:Any help would greatly be appreciated,
Thanks in advance for you feedback. Good luck to you!

Doesnt work
RonS: No that unfortunately doesnt do it for me. The GPU still likes to be very hot (58 celsius right now, 5 minutes after bootup). Any other solutions? Its also not the whole system. All other parts are cool. CPU is 39.
Archer: could you do me a favour and download the fancontrol app from here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/tp4xfancontrol
and tell me the temperature for your GPU when idleing? It wont do anything to your Notebook, it just reads out the values. Thanks a bunch. Also does your fan kick in at all? Or do you just dont mind the noise it makes? (it may not seem much for other people, but I can't live with it)
The Display is excellent, clear, crisp and no dead pixels. I'd really like to keep it, but the fan is driving me mad and fancontrol wont bring a solution, since the GPU is just hot. I doubt it will come down by software. And I also already tried the ATI Powerplay settings. They already were at the lowest level
Anyone out there with a T60P and FireGL, willing to confirm the temperature?
Best regards,
Vincent

Yes, I would be happy to download the utility to measure temps of my machine.filter wrote:Archer: could you do me a favour and download the fancontrol app from here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/tp4xfancontrol

My fan does run from time to time depending on what I'm going. When it is running it's quiet and emits lukewarm air out the exhaust vents. During heavy computing it runs all the time. Since I have so much experience with ThinkPads (Ten of them, all T series purchased new) I feel that I can accurately report this from a comparative basis. I think part of the issue here is the amount of ambient noise in the area where one is working. I'm in front of my ThinkPad 10hrs a day. I'm pretty picky and so I would notice and complain if it was an issue for me. Since I travel constantly with work, ThinkPads have been my only computer for years. I only say this to give you some background of my usage habits. At night in the hotel, when it's very quite, I can barely hear my fan when it is running. This is absolutely the best T series I have had.
I am going to be very busy for the balance of the day so it will be tomorrow before I can get back to you on the temps, but count on me to let you know asap what my temps are.
Thanks for your feedback.

Re: Doesnt work
My meeting this afternoon was cancelled so I have focused on the issue of testing operating temperatures. Here are the results.filter wrote:Archer: could you do me a favour and download the fancontrol app from here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/tp4xfancontrol

Testing Environment: Ambient Office Temp = 20 degrees Celsius
Ran the computer (idling) for 1 hour with the following results:
CPU 40 degrees C
GPU 49 “ “
Fan cycled on and off periodically.
Then after 1 hour of heavy resource intensive computing, temps:
CPU 52 C
GPU 58 C
Fan came on and remainded on at 52 C and higher.
Hope this information is helpful to you.
So, what are your thoughts?
Thanks,
Archer

I'm returning my T60P today for a ut077ge. It takes 3 Weeks of delivery =( though...
Thanks for helping me on this decision. I guess Ill have to live with the smaller resolution then.
edit: cancelled the order to get a MacBook Pro 17 inch.

Our model numbers are different in the US as I'm sure you know. What is a ut077ge? Configuration etc. Do purchase at a shop or direct online? Please keep me posted. I'm always looking to increase my knowledge.filter wrote:Thanks a bunch.

For reference, I installed fancontrol to watch the GPU temp while overclocking it (a V5200). At 490MHz it was heated to 105 degrees C and I didn't hear any change in fan noise.
Unlike the T43, which had a fan that was *loud*, all I hear out of the T60 is the sound of rushing air which I guess is unavoidable. In a room with HVAC running I don't hear the fan at all.
I am guessing that your T60p fan is a dud but you may have better hearing than me. Please report back and let us know how the new laptop compares.

From what I can gather, this is how the European Machine Type-Model numbering works:archer6 wrote:Our model numbers are different in the US as I'm sure you know. What is a ut077ge? TTTMMCC
TTT = The US equivalent Machine Type (UT0 = 2007, UD0 = 1951)
MM = The US equivalent Model (e.g. 2007-77U)
CC = The Country code, e.g. (GE = Germany, NO = Norway, UK, etc.)
Hence, UT077GE should equate to 2007-77U -- which does not exist in tabook, so must be customised or something.
You can have a look at the UK site to see some examples. Click on the machine and the equivalence is displayed on the details page.

The new one is basically going to have the same Hardware as the old one. Exept the Video Card is a x1400 and the resolution is 1400x1050 and not 1600x1200.
Since I asked someone else on this forum for his temperature on his T60P and it was the same as mine, I guess that mine was not broken in any way. So somewhere at around 60 degrees seem to be normal. Keeping it at that level seems to require constant fan use however. But I can't let the video card constantly run over 60 degrees without some kind of damage, can I?
At standard settings the fan kicks in when the GPU is at about 58-60 degrees. It cools it down until its at 55-58 again. Meaning, that even in idle mode the fan is almost constantly running, since the idle temperature seems to be at somewhere between 63 and 68 degrees. Which definetly is too hot. Isn't it?
I mean is there anyone here using the fancontrol app to let his FireGl run at a constant 65 or even more?
When I put the settings of fancontrol to start cooling at 64 degrees until reaching 60, the fan kicked in every five minutes for about 2-3 minutes or so.
Could it really be a solution to just accept that the card will run between 60 and 70 degrees and use fancontrol to keep it there, despite the fact that at standard bios settings it is being kept under 60 degrees?

I define cycles on and off periodically as I will describe here. When I am doing some resource intensive computing such as AutoCad , Video editing, rendering, or other design work, while having lots of applications open, the fan comes on and stays on.filter wrote:Archer: What do you mean by "cycles on and off periodically" ?
In other places I read that the t43 fans would run about 5 Minutes in one hour. This is the direction where I am aiming at...
Conversely, when I'm doing light duty work such as my email, writing a report, research on the web, the fan stays off.
Hope this clarifies it for you. Let me know.

It might be interesting to see not only the differences in temp between the X1400 and FGL5200... but also the 14" vs 15". 15" machines may tend to be cooler regardless of video card.

My T60 comes with x1400 and 14 inch lcd. GPU temperauture is around 65 degree celsius in idle mode and 75 degree when I play Warcraft III. Fan speed is 3300rpm in idle mode. Are the temperatures and fan speed normal?

I believe that yours is operating in a reasonable range. That said, I have some, but not a lot of comparative data from others. So, it's great to get this info from you and I will keep researching this.bibo wrote:My T60 comes with x1400 and 14 inch lcd.
