Best & Light sleeve to protect X60 in back pack

hi;
WOW ! Best notebook i ever owned ( i was using Dell X1 latitude before which was more quiet and i was really happy with it but this thing is awesome...)

Anyways, i keep my x60 in backpack (college/school padded type), with all the books, spiral notebooks and other junk....now i am start to notice x60 getting few noticeable scratches and i am looking for light and thin sleeve that will slide over the x60 without adding much weight.....not looking for something that is heavily padded just something to protect from getting scratches.....thanks…any recommendations…

Thanks for the response...looks great...but i was hoping to find something that is lighter, my back pack already provides the padded projection against any damage...just need it to protect from scratches and stuff while inside my back pack with other stuff...

try crumpler sheep scarer (europe) (or salary sacrifice - australia- dont know what is availabble in us, google it), lovely backpack and the sleeve in which you put the laptop is removable in case you need to take it apart from backpack.

i use that backpack and i;m more than happy with it!

they have different sizes. from 12" to 17" monitors!

just go to their website(google it, cause depends where you're from) and pick up your model!

if you want a case that can stand up to punishment and fit the x series laptops the Brenthaven 3180 will be it...

it's expensive but well worth it. the laptop will probably survive a two story drop with this thing on.

for my x40. it's worked out really well. the old model (6, iirc) fits perfectly with either the 4-cell or 8-cell, although they have more exact sizing these days. It's a little pricey, but it seems to be the only such product.

actually, tom bihn makes something similar that's slightly cheaper, but the sizing isn't quite as exact, and iirc it doesn't have the little pocket.

It fits it perfectly! No squeezing! No pinching! And no extra space for it to shake around inside the case!

The case itself is a stiff fabric. There are two zippers and the case opens three quarters the way around the laptop.

However, that means the X60 with the 4-cell battery would move around inside this case.

Overall, it's a rugged case but not too thick.

Question for all you Waterfield Sleeve owners: What set of options do you reccommend?

I'm thinking of getting a sleeve w/ flap and shoulder strap. I'm also considering getting a basic sleeve and a larger bag to hold it in (a la the one w/ the airplane buckle). Perhaps I should get all three? It's hard to decide. On the one hand, I want to be able to minimize my load. On the other hand, I'm going to be in school, so I may have heavy books to lug about. My head asplode!

Mine is the sleeve with flap - no shoulder strap because I always carry my laptop in a backpack.

I have many, many bags of all types and brands. Backpacks, Briefcases, Messenger Bags, etc. Brands like: Tumi, Coach, Tom Bhin, Timbuk2 "commute xl", Oakley, booq, etc. When it comes to sleeves I have an equally large inventory and the very best of the best is WaterField. It has the best material, construction, and form factor.

I have Waterfield sleeves for all my 60 series ThinkPads and the fit is fantastic. No extra bulk, a perfect fit, and great padding for protection. I would suggest getting the WaterField sleeve with the optional flap closure. With your __ series ThinkPad inside the sleeve you can then put it in any bag/briefcase etc and be very well protected. In addition, carried by itself for a dash into a Starbucks etc, it's the best.

I really like the Waterfield sleeves, as well. They're pretty expensive, though, especially once you add the flap, and the strap. I have been considering the "Shuttle" from Higher Ground Gear as I am really looking for something that I can put the machine in and then put that in a backpack.

It's not a perfect fit for the X60s, but it's not bad: http://www.laptopclassroom.com/shuttle.html. And it's only $40.

I use a regular Jansport backpack so I purchased the vertical recently without the flap or the strap. I prefer it without the flap so that I can have it charging while it being in the sleeve. It came out to be about 50 dollars. 9 dollars was for shipping.

really nice case. no disappointments except the 8cell version is a little bit wider than my backpack but not that much.

with the waterfield sleeve, do you need to be careful about how gently you place your backpack down on the ground?

I'm worried about the internals getting messed up if i let it down too hard one of these days..

also, if I were to have some books on top of the x60, do you think that would be a problem as well?

Well I think you need to be careful how you place your backpack on the ground with your laptop inside in ANY sleeve. But from the various sleeves I have seen, I would still want my laptop to be in a Waterfield sleeve.

IMO, the weight of books would not be a problem unless you went to an extreme with a dozen or more books.

thats definitely true - is there a decent amount of cushioning in the waterfield sleeve compared to a true laptop case? the reason why im concerned is sometimes i just like to put my stuff down at the end of the day without having to worry about whether something will break on the thinkpad.. with a laptop case, I have no qualms about putting it down anywhere (not dropping it or slamming it down, but i know there is like a 2 inch bubble at the bottom to prevent a shock from messing things up)

I just bought a waterfield sleeve and woah! It looks a lot better in real life than in picture.

I bought the vertical sleeve because I think it offers better protection when using in a backpack. Horizontal should be suit for horizontal bag though.

Has anybody purchased a waterfield sleeve yet for their x60s.? I'm a little confused by the dimensions listed on their website. Im looking to order a horizontal sleeve for my x60s with a 4cell but is it a typo that the x60 sleeve has smaller dimensions than the x60s sleeve (ie. 9.3 inches vs. 8.3)? Refer below

22-18 22-19 ThinkPad X 60s 4 cell 10.5 9.3 1.3
21-17 21-17 ThinkPad X 60 4 cell 10.5 8.3 1.0

Also, does anybody know if they horizontal sleeve for the x60s will fit an 8cell should i choose to upgrade in the future? There is only one size for the x60s listed and no 8 cell size option.

I got a waterfield sleeve for my X60s. It's horizontal and it's the 22-18. Apparently the X60 is differently shaped than the X60s...maybe someone with both can compare.

Anyhow, I have the 8-cell and the 4-cell slim line. With the 8-cell it's flush with the top. The 4-cell slim leaves some space. When I ordered I asked them to send some neoprene strips so that I could cut them up and put them in the bottom of the sleeve. If you only have the 4-cell, you may want them to make it slightly smaller.

thanks for the reply. the size difference is what i was questioning. the 22-18 that sfbags assigned for the x60s has larger dimensions than the 22-17 assigned for the x60 which is supposed to be the larger comp. i guess illtry to write them, it may be a typo.

smvp, how do you like your new case? do you think it would provide adequate protection if i use the case for my laptop and put it in my backpack? im concerned about the laptop getting crused by other items in my bag. i was initially looking for a sleeve that has suspension support like the swiss army sleeves. however, i couldnt find anything that would fit the x60s. therefore, i thought id try the waterfields since it seems to be highly recommended by the majority of thinkpad users on the forum.

I actually talked to them, and it was their understanding that the X60 is closer to the same dimension all along the laptop while the X60s is far thicker at the back than at the front. With the 22-18, it's a very snug fit putting it in. If it was smaller, I'm not sure you could get the machine in and out without breaking something.

I like the case quite a bit. I use it in a messenger bag, so I try to put it at the point furthest from my back. I haven't been concerned about it getting injured. The sleeve has what I would consider more than adequate padding if you think about where you're putting it in your bag.

If you're really worried about it getting crushed, you should try to find a hard shell case of some sort.
