Following up on the question by whoisjohngalt, how much bulk does the flap add to the case? Judging from the photos on the SFBags site, especially this one and this one, the flaps seem to be quite thick. I am also concerned about the flap end with the velcro fastener putting pressure right on the center of the display (e.g., when placed next to a big, heavy book in another bag) when I would prefer an entirely flat surface.

I have a X60 with 8-cell. I am thinking about getting a vertical 22-19 Waterfield SleeveCase. I'm a bit confused by their website's measurements, as there may be a typo between the X60 and X60s sizes as mentioned before, but I'm afriad the 22-18 will to too small for the X60 thicker rear. Will the 22-19 be a good choice, or will it be too big? I want a snug fit, but not small enough that it'll be difficult to slide it into the sleeve while it being in my backpack.
I have a Northface Recon backpack that's made with a laptop compartment.

I wonder if it would be a good idea to put this sleeve inside that compartment, or would it be too thick to fit in there? You can't have too much protection but I don't want it squeezing my X60 to death in there.
I'm also wondering whether I should get a flap and/or D-rings with the case...[/url]

I just got my Waterfield case (22-19 vertical with flap) in the mail last week. The flap isn't that thick, it's a layer of felt stitched to the ballistic nylon. It doesn't have the closed cell foam that the main sleevecase does. On the pressure issue, you can try putting the laptop in upside down, since the bottom of the case is flatter than the top. I did that for awhile when I was carrying my X60s in my backpack sans a case.FredFromNYC wrote:Following up on the question by whoisjohngalt, how much bulk does the flap add to the case? I think the X60 and the X60s are about the same thickness with the 8-cell battery (it adds about half inch to the back of my X60s). My laptop fits a 22-19 case just about right, it's a little loose, but still slides in with some resistance. I'd imagine that it would fit the X60 okay, even if it was a little bit thicker.spaznrq wrote:I have a X60 with 8-cell. I am thinking about getting a vertical 22-19 Waterfield SleeveCase. I got a sleevecase with a flap, but having it in my hands, it probably would work fine without the flap. The neoprene foam is rolled at the top edge, and that seems to provide pretty good protection against any inadvertant bumps it might get inside a backpack.

Waterfield
I just wanted to second what everyone has said about Waterfield. They have the best customer service that I have ever encountered with ANY business. They follow up on your order to ensure that you will be getting exactly what you want, respond to questions quicky, and make the experience a pure joy. Oh yeah, the bags are great too! Well worth the money in my opinion.

hey all.
i received my blue shinza case yesterday and i'm pretty happy with it. i was hauling my thinkpad "naked" in my backpack for a few days and I had marks on my LCD from the trackpoint pressing against the screen (i'm guessing from the weight of my books pressing against the lid). after i got the shinza, i haven't seen any marks at all on the LCD, it protects my laptop from sudden falls (like if I mistakenly place my backpack down too heavily), and looks like a retro jumpsuit with the white piping. i'm pretty happy and i've gotten quite a few compliments on it.
my reasons for choosing the shinza:
it was cheaper than the waterfield, was mentioned positively in a few different thinkpad threads, and has a zip-around giving it protection on all sides. i tend to use both shoulder bags and regular backpacks, so choosing between a waterfield horizontal and vertical was tough since it looks like most of their padding is on the "bottom" of the case - depending on which orientation it is. i felt the shinza gave me better all around protection. of course - the downside is that i have to take the entire case out of my bag just to get my laptop out - but that doesn't bother me that much.
i'd heard that the 11 inch shinza fits the x60s very very snugly, but i didn't want to risk the case being too small for my x60, so I got the 12 inch. the 12 inch shinza case is a bit large around the edges (i.e. the footprint is a little larger than the footprint of the thinkpad) but it fits snugly enough around the x60 that the laptop doesn't shift around despite the extra space.

i personally don't like zippers. no one uses high quality zippers except for a handful of companies, and when they do you obviously know because the price shows.
i have a waterfeild with a flap, velcro is 2 years old and it still works great.
if i were to buy another laptop sleeve would i get it from them? absolutly.
personally if you think 50 bux is a lot of money for a 2 grand laptop then idk what to tell you really.

I've used a horizontal waterfield sleeve for my T41p and it has been great. I recently purchased a vertical watersleeve case for my X60s + 8cell with their advised 22-19 size. It fits fine and I can easily leave the case in my backpack while taking my laptop out to use.

I bought a nice Brenthaven bag many years back when I was looking into getting a laptop. I didn't end up buying one and end up giving the bag to my sis for her Dell. She didn't use it much and so it's back in my possession. The sleeve that comes with the bag is a bit thick for the X60s so I'm thinking I should at least get a new sleeve? The question then is whether I should still use my brenthaven or simply put the X60s in a sleeve and then in a backpack along with my heavy books.
In terms of the waterfield sleeve, what is the reason for going with a vertical vs horizontal and vice versa. And is anyone getting a strap with it or are most sticking it into a bag or something?

Did you get a larger Brenthaven? I got the 3180 for the 12" lappy.
Yours came with a sleeve? Mine is too small to have a sleeve of it's own. I'm not sure what you mean.
Vertical is built for backpacks, horizontal for messenger bags. Maybe you have some better idea about the use of these, but I like that my vertical can plug in the headphones or power if I need to without removing it. On the other hand with the X60s a Horizontal bag might be more appealing to your aesthetics since the chassis it's more of a wedge shape and not entirely flat. Some vertical sleeve owners may not like this, but I don't mind. Just depends on which orientation you want. I wanted to be able to take the laptop out of the backpack and leave the sleeve in there.

Not to be redundant, but I wanted to share my Waterfield (www.sfbags.com) experience. I ordered my sleeve (22-18 for my X60s with 8-cell) on Wednesday. Wednesday afternoon I received the email stating that it shipped. Two days later and it's in my hands. It is extremely well made, and quite stylish. My lappy fits like it was custom made. Nicest touch: inside the shipping box was a hand-written note from whomever packed it thanking me for the purchase.
I would definitely deal with this company again.
Cheers,
Traci

I have the flap, suspension strap and piggyback. It makes a nice combination for carrying the computer by itself. I agree with other comments about aesthetics and quality. If you are only going to use the sleeve in a backpack, the flap is not necessary, but it makes sense if you will carry the computer on its own. The suspension strap is very comfortable because there is some elastic in the portion that goes over the shoulder (it is not practical if you want to switch between cross-body and over the shoulder, since the wide, padded portion is fixed on the strap). The piggyback bag is surprisingly useful. It holds the AC power adapter and lots more.Wolfie wrote:I think I'm going to go with an SF bag in the horizontal config. I too have the SF bag, but only with the flap which suits my needs perfectly. This is my second SF bag - my first one which is now 3 years old still looks new (can't figure that one out as I use the bag a lot), and I liked my first one so much I bought another for my X60s. I might add that this new SF bag has a pocket on the back into which you can carry 8 1/2 x 11 papers, and or the AC power adapter can also be crammed into it.
Thanks guys, this is an awesome thread. So much useful information. Deserves to be stickied, no doubt about that.
I'm not entirely sure if I should buy a Waterfield sleeve though. I'm a bit worried about the protection of the laptop compared to normal carrying cases. Can you for instance drop the laptop and expect it to not get any ugly marks when it has the sleeve on? Also, does your X60/s get any scratches on the screen by being in the sleeve?
I just want to be 100% sure this is the right choice for me, as buying one will cost me a bundle (international shipping plus a crap load of taxes when it arrives). So if anyone can clarify this for me, I would really appreciate it.

I can speak only for the SF sleeve. I have dropped mine several times and the laptop has suffered no ill effects as the SF sleeve is nicely padded.Spif wrote: Can you for instance drop the laptop and expect it to not get any ugly marks when it has the sleeve on? While I have not dropped mine in the Waterfield Sleeve, I like that it has a special strap on the bottom of the sleeve that allows you to slip a finger or two through it while carrying.First Light wrote:I can speak only for the SF sleeve. This provides an extra measure of safety and I must admit I believe it has prevented me from dropping mine in a couple of instances.

I would also check the booq powersleeves. I got both 12" models (the old black and the new grey one) for my X31 and X60s and they can be used both as a sleeve inside a backpack and as a standalone bag for the laptop. Excellent build quality, and perfect fit for the X series (I also have the 14" one which is a perfect fit for a T4x 14" with extended battery).
