S3 Tweak Utility - works (kind of) on T23

#1 Post by WRB » Thu Apr 27, 2006 1:55 pm

I was doing some casual research about the S3 chips in our T's and stumbled across this utility that someone wrote a good 5 years ago to tweak the settings of S3 chips, and it just so happens I was able to install it and play around with the video settings including over/underclocking on my T23 Supersavage 16meg.

Heres the link:

Unfortunately (or obviously) the original website doesn't exist anymore, therefore there is no active support forum. However, the program does come with a pretty complete help file with a troubleshooting section.

I've installed an run the program a few times, so I'll share what I've learned so far.

The most interesting settings to me are the over/under clocking settings in the advanced mode. Not that I see much benefit to overclocking, but what the hey, I like to play.

I have so far been unable to overclock the chip at all. It leads to a corrupt desktop, then I have to restart and delete some registry settings just to get the program to run again (detailed in help file). I'm probably not doing it right, but who knows.

I was able to underclock from 143mhz down to 90 without problems. I ran Bitblt to benchmark and it ran the benchmark slower, which tells me it probably worked. I also tried watching an encoded Nero digital video and it played fine at the underclocked setting.

If anyone else trys this and has anything to say, please share!

I remember using that utility for a savage 4 card i had for a desktop system long ago. I was planning to try it with my t21 until its unfortunate demise.
However, doesn't it only work in windows 98se?

I used it with win xp pro sp2, and it worked. it also was compatible with 2k. I think this program was written before the xp days but it works without compatibility mode.
