Busted connector - is this critical??

#1 Post by schUsseln » Thu Apr 27, 2006 6:42 pm

Hi all,
So my power socket stopped working, and I took it upon myself to see what was happening (maybe it was just a loose connection). Along the way I managed to pull the daughter card socket right off the system board, pins and all!

I can't find any documentation to tell me exactly what the cable does - somehow bluetooth still works...so before I go and invest in a new system board, I was hoping someone here might have some insight as to what this socket (that I've circled) is responsible for:
http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/4412/daughter6qx.jpg

Note that this image is missing a second output cable from that socket, which runs to the middle of the chassis.

The machine is in for repair of the power socket, but they won't cover the daughter-card repair under warranty (not too shocking).

So, questions:
1 - what the heck does this thing do if it doesn't run bluetooth? Can I live w/ it as a broken connection?
2 - is this the sort of thing that can just be re-soldered (the current repair shop doesn't solder, but I thought maybe someone else would)

Thanks in advance for any suggestions / help!

MOD EDIT: Please use links instead of actual pics, or place a pic warning in the subject line.

Didn't check the modem or ethernet before I put it in the shop...but yeah, wireless works still. I've never broken something with so little obvious effect :)

That is the bluetooth daughter card right? If so, I'm guessing bluetooth and the modem should be operating from the same card.

If that's the case, I'm guessing that it could just be some kind of sound connection. Looks suspiciously like one of those sound cables that are attached from sound card to cdrom drives.

Or maybe I'm completely off the mark. But most internal and some usb modems these days are just overglorified soundcards.

It's just a guess since the daughter card's the main connector also holds it in place. The side plug is probably the modem sound connector that sends the sqeeks and squelches of dial up to the speakers.

Gosh - I hope you guys are right!!

Repair folks didn't give me a real breakdown of what the connector does - and still think bluetooth should be broken. But the tech did relay that the machine works fine without it, which saves me about $1000 - and I can get it re-soldered down the line.

If you grabbed your pic from the HMM, you'd find in the removal instructions that the little cord you're indicating is the modem connection. Since the CDC is either modem or modem/Bluetooth, your WiFi functionality would not be effected at all.

Check your DEVMGMT.MSC and see if a modem is still listed. ;)

IIRC, this is the connector that mates the DC to the RJ11 modem jack, so while your modem would still appear in your System Device Listing, you would not be able to connect to it without fixing the socket. Given the speeds of a modem and the general availability of WiFi, is this even an issue any longer?

I've got a P40 (7374U75) without BT, since I never use the Modem, I physically removed it from the system, since it was just using juice for no reason.

Cheers,

Jim
