How to decode the ThinkPad Model number

#1 Post by Scottah » Thu Apr 27, 2006 7:33 pm

Hi guys, Im looking at a custom made thinkpad, which has the model number 1871PM1

I hear model numbers can usually be decoded to describe the specs of the machine.

example: 18 might mean 1.8 GHZ and PM might mean Pentium M etc

Would appreciate any help, or points in the right direction.

Thanks,

Scott

No, they don't "decode" like that at all.

As noted above you can get mapping of a model/config number to specific product features in the support section of the IBM web site.

Cheers,

Bill

FAQ item #1. ;) The xxxx-xxx is referred to as the "MTM," or Machine Type/Model.

IBM also has a page where you can type in the Machine Type and Serial number and get original shipped specs on a used machine. 90% sure that's also listed in the FAQ.
