Screen Flex - To the EXTREEME

#1 Post by revolutionary_one » Thu Apr 27, 2006 8:49 pm

Never noticed any significant screen flex when I first got my thinkpad. But now even if i tap on the back of the LCD, I get flex (ripples).

More so when i tap the center, and its drastic. Secondly, when i move the thinkpad the hinges get wobbly and more ripples (reminiscent of my friends dell 700m). Maybe its because the thinkpad is getting more abuse than usual, but not more than what's being reported here.

Is this normal? I never thought I'd have the same flex as the HP's i used to play with at CostCo.

Cheers

Probably not normal. My now disabled T40 went through 3 years of being dragged around almost every day, and the neither the hinges nor the display ever had any wobble or distortions.

Yea, my LCD doesnt wobble perse, but it does move backwards when i move the laptop heavily.

i think i might have to tighten the hinges or just get the lcd replaced when i can part with my laptop for a couple days.

Does the hardware maintenence manual have guides on how to tighten the hinges? and inspect for damage to the LCD?

cheers.

Is this a new TP, or one you got used?

I would say that is not normal at all. I can't get any screen wobble or any screen distortion, even when I try.

Oh, nono, this is a new thinkpad mentioned in the sig direct from IBM (bought about 6 months ago)

It's nothing that's a bother really, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to get thinkpad protection to fix:

the screen wobble, screen flex, little dot in the center of the LCD from the trackpoint.

I sure hope i dont have to deal with some of the horror stories of getting something simple fixed at depot. Atleast now i know to remove the [extra]RAM, HD, Ultrabay CDRW/DVD thanks to this forum ;)

Cheers

"Little dot on the lcd from the trackpoint" ... easy to fix, ensure your trackpoint cap is firmly on the button (gentle pressure will get it on), and when you transport the laptop, lay a non-lint cleaning cloth on the keyboard before closing. Problem solved.

I noticed that my thinkpad also has lots of ripples even with the slightest move of my screen. I thought it was normal but as I am compaing my friend's tp to mine, he gets no flex and no ripples. Like someone said earlier, I have to try to get ripples on his screen, even then it's only like one or two ripples. My ripples are like when you drop a pebble in to a pond or something. My 30 days are up and I can't exchange it anymore, so I don't know what to do.

When I purchased the think pad, it did come with a 3 year warranty. Will that cover a new screen? My fan turns on alot more frequently than his does and is louder than his as well.. I'm sad.

If you're looking for affirmation that what you see is wrong

LCD screens are not supposed to wiggle, ripple, shimmer, dance or otherwise distort with the slightest provocation. I think you are entitled to a call to Support to ask for a repair/replacement.
