A30p Push the Button 15 times...

#1 Post by mixz1 » Fri Apr 28, 2006 2:12 am

One of my A30p's would not power up. The tech at EZSERV had me try a routine of disconnecting the power brick, removing the battery, pushing the power button 15 times and holding it down for 30 seconds on the 16th push, reconnecting the brick and the battery and hitting the power button. It worked but after a few weeks it would not power up again and the fix didn't work. EZSERV replaced the systemboard.

6 months later it's happened again and the button push routine worked again. Can anyone explain what this "solution" does? And...am I headed for yet another system board?

Forgive my loose terminology, but essentially it discharges any stored power in the capacitors/resistors that might be causing boot problems.

This has been a good solution in many cases, including a Thinkpad 600 that I worked on several years ago.

Thanks for the quick reply. Taking into account that some odd capacitor is not being discharged (resistors don't store power), and that this is systemboard #2, is this a) an inherent problem, and b) an indication that I'm going to be buying systemboard #3?

A scematic of the systemboard would be very helpful, but I guess that it's considered proprietary information. Maybe I should take a drive up to Guadalajara and root the the garbage :D .

Dead Again

#4 Post by mixz1 » Sat Apr 29, 2006 6:33 am

Well, it's dead again and won't wake up. I'm thinking of forgetting another repair and just replacing the old warrior. I think this particular series just runs too hot to maintain component integrety. It was a great machine while it lasted :( .
