A31p mainboard problems?

#1 Post by lucutus » Fri Apr 28, 2006 10:10 am

Hi,

I've got some trouble with my A31p since yesterday. The Thinkpad won't boot up anymore after a reboot. So turning the TP on, everything that happens are three beep codes (long-short-short). The display remains black. Mainboard or graphic card problems?

The thing I don't understand is, that I've changed nothing. All hard- and software is still the same. I didn't even switch batterys or Ultrabay items.

Have you got any ideas?

Thanks,

Luc

Accoring to the Hardware Maintenance Manual (page 57), the beep codes that you have listed tell you to check the following items:

1. System Board
2. LCD Assembly
3. DIMM

Since the easiest is the ram, I would try reseating the ram first, then the LCD connections, then if all else fails it might be your system board.

Thanks for the hint. I'll try to check DIMM and LCD assemby tonight, hoping that it's not the mainboard....

Being that it is an A31, is it still under warranty?

If it is, just check the DIMM slot. If it isn't the DIMM slot, then I would have IBM take the next steps...just in case.

Lucutus, Did you use a Credit Card to purchase the A31p new? If so, it might be covered on an extended warranty. I used a Visa Platinum card to extend the warranty on my A30p, the lcd screen cold cathode tube went bad. They extended the 3 year warranty another year, and paid $543.61, for the repair. Call your credit card company, they will give you the 800 number to call.
