No Lenovo Forums?
No Lenovo Forums?
It appears that Lenovo doesn't support user forums the way Dell, Apple and others do. Is this true?
I'm looking for a place to get recommendations for setting up security options on my new T-60.

IBM didn't support the forums either, atleast not for very long. IBM had a support forum that was outdone by Bill's forum here. IBM just couldn't compete with this one, if you ask me.
Dell has a support forum, but they are no where near as useful as this one is. I tried looking up LCD compatability information on an Inspiron 4150, and saw that the typical response was "you'd have to send it in for repair" (smashed LCD).

Re: No Lenovo Forums?
Correct. The old IBM Forums were killed off years ago and not replaced by Lenovo. We've always taken a bit of pride in having driven the stake into the heart of the IBM Forums by being a more helpful place to come for assistance.BudC wrote:It appears that Lenovo doesn't support user forums the way Dell, Apple and others do. Why not ask here in the T60 Forum?BudC wrote:I'm looking for a place to get recommendations for setting up security options on my new T-60.

Well, considering that most of the answers from IBM's staff on their forum were "Call the help desk", we would have been hard-pressed to be less helpful!JHEM wrote:We've always taken a bit of pride in having driven the stake into the heart of the IBM Forums by being a more helpful place to come for assistance.![]()

Plus here you get help like:
-How to gut your Laptop
-Hacking Windows OS
-Pretty Decent Linux Support
-Seasoned Thinkpad owners/collectors.
You wont find that on any laptop manufacturer's forums.

That was my experience over there too when I bought my old Dell - this forum is so much more user-friendly and the layout is impeccable!tfflivemb2 wrote: Dell has a support forum, but they are no where near as useful as this one is. I actually find the Dell forums quite helpful. However, people here are even more helpful and certainly friendlier!

Yes, the Dell forums are helpful. But if you want to perform anything near service level, you get the typical "Send it in for service" type of response. I can't blame them since the Admins are employed by Dell and they do not want the added liability of being responsible for damage as a result of faulty or misleading advice.pianowizard wrote:I actually find the Dell forums quite helpful. So that wasn't a unique experience I had when I tried it.nonny wrote:Well, considering that most of the answers from IBM's staff on their forum were "Call the help desk", we would have been hard-pressed to be less helpful!JHEM wrote:We've always taken a bit of pride in having driven the stake into the heart of the IBM Forums by being a more helpful place to come for assistance.![]()
All they did was tell you to call.

Re: No Lenovo Forums?
Periodically, I would point people over here (well, to the old forum). to comp.sys.laptops or ibm.ibmpc.thinkpad when I saw things that I knew had been discussed elsewhere and weren't getting answered there. I got my hands smacked for it a few times.DIGITALgimpus wrote:So that wasn't a unique experience I had when I tried it.

Going outside of IBM "approved channels" was streng Verboten!
And God forbid if you had the temerity to disagree with one of the moderators, especially WRT something that wasn't "officially" supported like CPU upgrades or using large HDs.
