Another Successful T20 Frankenpad Upgrade
We've had our T20 for 4-5 years now, and recently retired it after picking up a T40. I couldn't bear to part with it, as it has been a reliable laptop to us for years. I decided to slowly replace the worn, and cracked parts (it survived both our kids since birth) and upgrade the processor, memory and hard drive. I watched the E-bay auctions and picked up parts here and there, learned which sellers were good, and not so good. The next to last step was accomplished today when I pulled the 750 P3 and replaced it with a 1GHz SL53S P3. I also replaced the T20 heatsink and fan with a T22 version. The laptop booted right into Windows XP without any problems! I used arctic silver 5 on the heatsink and it seems to be running very, very well. The unit does not seem to be any warmer than it was pre-frankenpad. Next week I'll be swapping out the lid, (it's all scratched up) with a new one. This baby is looking good and running fast. Glad I kept it! Much thanks to the board for their knowledge and willingness to share data, I could'nt have done it without you guys!

So that is what a Frankenpad is. I guess I've been selling FrankenPads for a while.
I update ALL the heatsinks to the T22 ones, and manage to lose the rubber pad at the same time.
(Oops!) AS5 is the only thing I'd even consider using.
As far as the SL53S, I usually replace the 700-750 with an 800 or 850, since the 1000 is too hard to find. (My personal T20 has one, though.)
Highwayman, if you want to see what real speed is, get a 6200 RPM HDD.
Oh, if you can't find a decent cover, let me know. (Is it legal to offer parts outside of the classifieds section?)

A casual offer such as your's? Sure.skou wrote:Oh, if you can't find a decent cover, let me know. (Is it legal to offer parts outside of the classifieds section?)
(I'm pretty sure you meant to refer to a 7200RPM HD, not 6200RPM!)

Thanks anyway, but I already bought and received a brand new T20 lid and installed it. I got it off Ebay for 30 bucks. It included all the round sticky things and such as packaged by IBM. My T20 could pass for new now, kinda cool. I use it mostly for wireless web surfing in the living room while my kids and wife watch the tube.
Anyone here found the Ultrabay 2000 batteries of good use?

I really like the Ultrabay 2000 batteries. I got one with my T30 and it was adding about 1.5 hours to the battery time, and it had already had some decent usage.Highwayman wrote:Anyone here found the Ultrabay 2000 batteries of good use?
I just lucked out on eBay and picked up one for $19.10. When I rec'd it, I tossed it in and let it charge....it only had ONE cycle!!!
Battery
I had a similar experience with a main battery. Bought one off of ebay; turned out to have too many charges. Emailed the seller. He shipped me 2 battery to replace the bad on I received. One with 33 charges, the other with 1!

Good people! Bought a LOT of stuff from them over the years both directly and through clients.

$36 from an E-Bay seller in England. Make sure you swap your Heatsink/Fan for the T22 model and use Arctic Silver 5. I think my T20 is now running cooler with the 1Ghz processor than the original 750mhz and old T20 heatsink/fan. The base is not nearly as warm as I use my T20 mostly on my lap and wireless to the net (as I type this). Thinkpads-r-us is a good place to buy from on E-bay. I have purchased from them without any problems. Don't get into any bidding wars and you should find one same price I did.NTL1991 wrote:Theres an ebay store which is located close to my house that sells good parts... Congrats! I will be upgrading my 800Mhz to a 1.0Ghz and the HD to a 7200PRM soon... How much did the SL53S cost you?
