Trouble with video chip

#1 Post by sonne » Fri Apr 28, 2006 8:24 pm

I want my X40 back... even though it was a lot slower than my X60s, at least it was stable!

With my X60s I keep getting crashes from time to time. It is really annoying. Sometimes no crash for one week, but usually once or twice a day. It's going on like this ever since I got the new laptop. After googling I decided that it is a problem with the video driver and as it is bleeding edge hardware I might be lucky that they release a fix or a driver update. But now I have been waiting for about two months and nothing in sight..

As I already posted earlier in this forum on another thread, what happens is that an application (e.g. some game) crashes, windows switches to a very small resolution and I get a little box telling me that "ialmrnt5 driver has stopped working" and that I need to restart the machine. When I do this, an error report is sent to Microsoft and a website pops up, telling me that my error is called:

STOP 0x000000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER

STOP: 0x100000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER_M

It recommends me to install the latest video driver or to turn of hardware acceleration. I already tried the latest driver for the Intel GMA express 945GM chipset, and also the latest driver for this X60s model offered by Lenovo. I also turned off hardware acceleration completely. None of that helps.

I'm wondering whether the issue might be due to faulty RAM, because the Intel GMA Express 945GM is based on shared memory. I have 1x 533 512MB and 1x 677 1GB RAM in the X60s. I tried using only one of the two at the same time but I still get crashes so I think I can rule this out.

I wonder whether it is possible that the video hardware is broken and if I could replace it with something else. I already contacted Lenovo support but they told me I have to ask the software support which is not free of charge after I'm already out of the 30day-up-and-running phase.

Does anybody have any hint for me what I could try to locate the error?

I would restore it back to the factory setting (use the thinkvantage button before it boots to windows) and see if that fixes it. If not, then its def. a hardware problem.
