Z60m Screen Latch

#1 Post by medevilenemy » Sat Apr 29, 2006 5:07 pm

I've been wondering.... what kind of screen latch does the Z60m use, and how does it work? (cant find any good close-up pictures which clear this up)

its a slide thingie (on the right) with two hooks one on each side (right left) had no problems with it and it seems very durable.

Actually, this was the one part of my 1st thinkpad that I am less than impressed with. The actual latches are thin, flexible plastic that, imo, look extremely prone to breaking down the road. I really would have expected better given the quality of the rest of the unit. Even Dell moved away from this design several years ago (and every Dell we have with latches of this sort has two broken latches). Why they don't make these out of metal is beyond me.

When I was looking for reviews for this machine, I found an ad that actually touted the "faster, single handed opening mechanism". I spend more time looking for the second switch on the outside cover. I just checked them out, and they are pretty flimsy, but since I own this laptop, it will be babied. I'm pretty amazed when I see some of the damage done to laptops by corporate end uders. Do they use them for Huriling?

I havent found these easy to break on any of my thinkpads, tbh...

T23, X31 and T40 and havent had any problem with the latches... the Z60 at office depot looked the same as well. I wouldnt worry about it.

My ThinkPads get a lot of use, and I have never had one latch break, nor have I heard of it. We have 86 in the company.

wow.

well, it'll be a while before i can see how well mine does. The current estimated shipping date is 5/19 (it was originally 5/4). The lenovo tech support person i spoke to said that should be about right.

I know, it's frustrating to have to wait. However once you receive your new ThinkPad you will be glad you waited. I am very pleased with mine.

As a side note, I "compared notes" with a guy today at Starbucks who just received his new Dell laptop. Side by side the ThinkPad really puts the dell to shame. He has experienced several problems starting with the ordering process & delays, then upon receiving it more problems in a number of areas. We have it made here and perhaps it's easy to forget how good the ThinkPad is.

cool.

Actually, that reminds me of an interesting question...

How would the performance on my thinkpad (1.86Ghz Pentium M 533Mhz FSB, 1GB DDR2, Intel GMA 900) fare against my PC (2.2Ghz Athlon XP 3200+ 400Mhz FSB, 1GB DDR, GeForce FX 5200)?

Something tells me that my thinkpad might actually outperform my desktop.

Great question!

That's a tough one, as there are so many variables. Hard drive speed is certainly faster on desktops so that's an advantage there. Most noticeable on boot up, loading apps, working on graphics intensive apps etc.

That said, I predict that you will be really happy with the speed of your new ThinkPad. Notice the specs on mine below. Interestingly, for most all around computing my Z is nearly as fast as the T60 which has the CoreDuo processor, more ram, etc. The difference is certainly not significant. Again, one of the reasons that I'm really enjoying this Z.

I might also add that the my Z60m came with 512mb memory. I chose to order it with the standard configuration so it would not delay the order waiting for Lenovo to install the extra ram.

For the first week I used the computer in the original configuration just to be sure that everything ran fine. Then I added the additional 1.0 GB for a total of 1.5 GB and that did make a very noticeable improvement in speed. I expected an increase but it was more than I anticipated, a pleasant surprize.

interesting, anyway thanks for the feedback :-) You are right about the hard disk speed thing, except there is one more variable there to consider... bandwidth. The thinkpad uses SATA which allows a much higher data transfer bandwidth than my PC which uses IDE (although i have leads for SATA i've never wanted to spend the money to buy a SATA drive). It probably doesnt make too much of a difference, it is just an interesting thing to think about.

My plan is to run a benchmark utility on my PC and my thinkpad after i get the thinkpad set up to my liking. It will be interesting to see what the results will be.

Good point, there is some difference there.

Excellent, this should be interesting.
When are you expecting to receive your new ThinkPad?

It is alledged to be "on track to ship at the end of the week", so if it does ship as expected i'd expect to recieve it sometime between saturday and tuesday (depending on how metaphysically good or bad shipping wants to be)

sure.

by the way, one thing is funny... if it turns out taking longer than two days to ship, their gaurantee would actually have me paying them an extra dollar if i cared about it. (the deal is that they pay you the difference between normal and what you paid for, but i actually paid less for 2 day than normal would be, lol)
