PC133 Memory in T21?

#1 Post by NTL1991 » Sat Apr 29, 2006 10:51 pm

Is PC133 Memory Backward Compatible with PC100 so I could put that in my laptop? Or do I have to go with the more expensive PC100 Memory?

Thanks,

Nick

I tried several different 256mb and 128mb PC133 sticks in mine and none worked.

Here I go again, disagreeing with a Mod. :D

I got a bunch of 133, 128 MB, cheap from a guy on another Forum, and it works just fine in my T20-22s and my T23. I also have a couple of 100 sticks that won't run in my T23.

As far as 256MB sticks, they need to be low density 100 (I don't think there is any low density 133) to run in a T20-22, and 133 to run in the T23.

Low density will have 8 chips on each side.

No problem with disagreeing...again.

If you were able to get PC133 ram to work in a T20-T22, can you post some of the specs on the ram?

I was careful this time in saying that I wasn't able to get them to work in my T21.

I should also add, for the record, that unlike most users, I was able to get my two PC100 256mb ram sticks (from my T21) to work in two T23s that I had at the time (both were 4MU models)

Here we go, this is from the sticker on the stick of memory. My eyes are too far gone, to read the tiny writing on the chips. :D

Toshiba
THLY12N01A75L
PC133-333-642
699797/0134 AKC
16M x 64 SDRAM
Assy in Taiwan

I can see that the chips are Toshiba, though.

Well, I have 256MB (2x 128MB) in it now, I want to max it out with 2 256MB's...

Thanks for the info.

Have you had success with the 256mb sticks?

The reason that I ask, is that I have had 128mb PC133 sticks that worked in a 600E, but wouldn't work in this same T21. What is confusing about it, is that the 600E is PC66!?!? Go figure. I haven't had ANY 256mb PC133 sticks work in my 600Es, or again the T21.

Oh yes. Just make SURE they are 100, and low density. If you look at a stick of 128, it has 4 chips on each side. Low density will have 8 square chips on each side, but you gotta look close, The chips look like the same chips, but if you look close, there are 2 of them, instead of 1 in each row, and a tiny gap, that your fingernail will barely fit in.

Now, does anyone have a couple sticks of 133 512, for a T23? :D

@skou: I should have been more clear...I was just trying to make sure that you weren't able to get 256mb PC133 sticks to work in a T20-T22, since I had not heard of it being done.

@NTL1991: If you are upgrading beyond your 2 128mb sticks, skou is correct, you need to have PC100 and they have to be low density (16chips, 8 on each side). Yes, they are more expensive.

64MB and 128MB PC133 sticks will frequently work in older 100MHz based system. Problems primarily arise with attempts to use 256MB PC133 sticks.

They can't as the T23 is a 133MHz BUS system.

Generally, they can't as the T23 is a 133MHz BUS system.

As stated above, I have had the two PC100 256mb sticks from my T21 work in the two T23 (4MU) systems that I had a few months back.

That's very surprising, can you post the specs on the RAM?

The T23s are the least finicky of the early T series machines WRT RAM and will happily function with almost any PC133 sticks. But, unike you, I've never had any success using PC100 sticks from any of my 600 series or T2X machines in a T23.

66MHz is half of the clock speed of a PC133 memory stick and is therefore stable.

 Turns out that my sticks are 256mb PC133 sticks. (One is Micron the other is Crucial) I didn't realize that they were PC133 until I checked the part numbers. The Micron actually says 133MHz on the label. I should really learn to read with my eyes open, before I talk.

Micron: MT16LSDF3264HG-13EE4
Crucial: CT32M64S4WE

@NTL1991: Yes, you might be able to use low density 256mb PC133 ram in a T21. The two sticks that I lsted above are working without any problems in my T21.

HUH!?!?! Most of the time the answer is NO, you can't use PC133 256MB sticks in a T21!

You need lo-density PC100 memory, IBM part no. 33L3070 or equivalent.

There are reports from time to time that arise here from folks who say that they have 256MB PC133 sticks working in a 600X, T20, T21 or T22. I've never been able to duplicate their success.

Modified my post above to reflect that the OP might be able to get the low density PC133 256mb sticks to work in their T21.

My T21 is a 2647-4BU.

The 256MB PC133 low density ram sticks are:
Micron: MT16LSDF3264HG-13EE4
Crucial: CT32M64S4WE

No guarantees as to whether or not it will work on the OP's T21.

OK... Ill look for the PC100 256MB RAM. Im Amazed at how expensive it is! Its like 40 bucks for a stick whereas Desktop SDRAM is like half that. Should I sell my 128's that I have in it now, or keep them when I get the 256s in?

I would keep your ram until you get the new ones in, just incase something doesn't go right. Wouldn't want you to be without a thinkpad, right?

What is the full model and type number of your T21 (ie. 2647-4BU)?

I have 2 x p133 128Mb modules in this T21 now.

As I said before they would not work with the original bios.

With the very latest, not problems at all.

According to this new sticky post, there are some 256mb sticks that are guaranteed to work in a T20-T22.

It turns out that my T21 is using two 256mb PC 133 sticks, as well.
