Dying motherboard?

#1 Post by Nolonemo » Mon May 01, 2006 5:03 pm

My T23 has started acting wierd at time and I'm not sure what it is, because of recent hardware changes - I recently upgraded the CPU from a 1.13 to a 1.2, and upgraded the drive from a 60GB 5400 rpm Seagate to a 60GB 7200 rpm Hitachi.

Thus, I have identified three potential causes for the problems I will describe below:
1. dying mobo
2. T23/XP doesn't play nice with new CPU
3. T23/XP doesn't play nice with new HD

The problems I experience seem pretty random:

1. Sometimes computers will take a long time to boot, gets stuck on the XP logo boot screen, with the drive light on. If I force a power off and reboot, usually it will boot fine.

2. Occasionally, I get a dialog box popping up that says something like "removable drive is in use an cannot be stopped" (very rough paraphrase) when the DVD drive is in use.

3. Twice, after booting with a bootable CD to do a backup image of the HD, when I tried to log onto Windows, XP did not recognize my user password, and I had to logon as Administrator to reset it.

Other data points: I ran memtest86+ overnight, and the memory looks good). No wierd beeps or anything on POST.

The boot issue has me particularly concerned - both as a symptom, but also because there are times when I don't have the time to spend 10 min trying to get booted into Windows.

I guess what I should do is to put the old processor and old HD back in (I haven't formatted or overwritten it) and see if things settle down.....

Any comments?

Did you check the HD with PC Doc/Fitness test? I would do that and then a repair or complete installation of Windows.

sounds very much like a corrupted HDD, which means that it is probably not in tip-top shape if it is new. I could understand some corrupted files due to windows crashing and such over a couple years, but if it is brand new i would definatly be RMAing that drive, as it sounds like it is dying.

Repair install is a good idea, I meant to do that yesterday, but forgot.

I'll do the repair and PC doctor tonight.
