Saw that this morning on Fatwallet and Slickdeals and am very tempted to sell my wife's T43 to get this. I just really want the SXGA display. Everything else is pretty much the same from what I can tell compared to what I have right now.

The video card on that T42 is only a Radeon 7500 though. The Radeon 9600 is more equivalent to your X300.

Unless the computer is used for games, for most tasks Radeon 7500 will be more than adequate.
The SXGA+ would be a big plus. I would take SXGA+ over Radeon 9600 anyday.

Why do they offer a 3-year extended warranty on something that's already supposed to have a 3-year warranty?
$119.00 Warranty Service Contract: 3-year depot repair (Part# 41C9176)
Or does the "limited warranty" only apply to parts, after the 1st year?

Why can't I find the T42 2379R5U in the current Systems Reference? The More details #2379R5U link, on the special offer page, doesn't seem to work.

I guess that, while SXGA+, this is still a 150 nits screen, like the XGA. Is it so much better? I am oscillating between buying this notebook or a more expensive T60 XGA Dual Core.

I'm pretty sure that's the "Accidental Damage" warranty. Covers for any damage to the unit, even if you drive over it with your car!

i'd get the T40 w/ the SXGA+, as I value the SXGA+ and the screen real estate compared to XGA is much more important than getting the latest processor (for me at least). 1024x768 is too small for me, and 1400x1050 on a 14.1" screen is perfect sized for me to do work on

I googled the part number (41C9176) and it seems to be the 9-to-5, on-site, next business day warranty. I contacted Lenovo about this; let's see if anything changes.

I have just calculated that 1400x1050 on a 14.1" LCD looks about the same as 1920x1440 on my 19" CRT. Wow! How can people work at a resolution like that? On my CRT, I can barely stand even 1200x960 (I prefer 1024x768).

I can't duplicate your math. Did you calculate based on the CRT's overall 19" size or based on the 17" viewable area? A 17" LCD is equal to a 19" CRT in viewable area.

I'm an old man with diminished visual acuity. The 20" Dell LCD on my desktop is UXGA (1600 x 1200) and is simply perfect.

My laptop is a 14.1" SXGA+.

Thank you for your post, James.

I calculated considering the visible area of my 19" CRT as being almost 18" (measured it), or about 1.3 times bigger than that of a 14" LCD. So, that would make a resolution of 1400x1050 on the 14" look like (1400x1.3)x(1050x1.3) on my 18".

Even considering a factor of 1.2 (17" visible), 1400x1050 on 14" is similar to 1680x1260 on my screen. While I can still read from the screen, if I change my settings to 1600x1200, I am not sure I really enjoy "the view".

Sure, James, but did you mention that you have to wear your 3.25+ readers to read that 14.1 SXGA+ ? :P

I just purchased my first thinkpad through this deal. I'm freakin excited because I know how good these notebooks are, and I almost gave up on buying a T42. My daily internet routine consists of checking Lenovo.com, then on to this forum, then ebay as my last resort for deals on T42's, and then i do it again about every 10 min.. but I just haven't been able to find one.
So after my purchase, I came straight here to post this deal up, and i'm glad to see it already up here.. I've been researching and waiting forever for a good deal on a T42.
I'm pretty impatient, so if it weren't for Bill and everyone on this forum, I would have probably bought a dell a few months ago. Thanks everyone!

I am thinking myself about buying a Dell 620/820. I simply cannot afford paying more than $1200 for a notebook. I would buy the $1099 T42 in an instant, if it only were XGA. :(

I am in the same boat. I would like a new ThinkPad, but they are really expensive. This one cost me $1900 after RAM and Wireless upgrades, and the only reason I was able to afford it was because I won some Microsoft freebies that I was able to eBay for close to $700 . (Windows XP Pro retail box and a Visual Studio package).

The $999 T42 is a good deal, but only has a 1-year warranty. At the $1000-1200 price point, only Dell and HP offer a selection of machines with 3-year warranties.

The 3-year warranty is really important to me, as 3 years is now my standard replacement cycle for machines.

If Lenovo could offer the ThinkPad Z60t series machine with Intel's Core Duo processor and a 3-year warranty for $1200, I would buy it. Right now Dell has a comparable widescreen (Latitude D620) at about that price point, but I'd rather buy the ThinkPad.

The Z60t chasis has been around for a few months, and I think its pretty proven by now. Ok.. I'll stop derailing the thread

A T42 with SXGA+ for only $1099 is a super deal! If I didn't already have the Dell Inspiron 700m, I would certainly grab one. Actually, maybe I should sell the Dell and get this T42!

In Hong Kong, Lenovo is giving away Port Replicator II for any T43/p sold (along with spare battery).

Since the T6x series don't use same Port Replicator II...

Not for me. I am afraid I won't be able to read the fonts at 1400x1050 on a 14" screen, and I really dislike the way Windows XP looks with disproportionate fonts.
