New T43 - went for 14" XGA screen

#1 Post by Rory » Tue May 02, 2006 2:56 pm

Just wanted to say thanks for all the info on here that helped me choose my machine. I did seriously consider the 15" SXGA+ (1400 x1050) but was concerned that my older eyes might not cope very well with web pages designed 800 pixels wide, and that resized pages generally might look blurry.

In the event, I'm very happy with the 14" XGA - the machine is exactly the same size as my old Compaq Evo N610C but the display is a whole lot brighter and clearer.

I got the 2Ghz processor, and, in answer to biosales post, I think the fan is very quiet. I use it in my home office and it's barely noticeable. The only issue I've had is the minidock appears to have a faulty (DOA) USB hub. Lenovo are sending a new one (when they get some more).

Screen

I also went with the XGA screen. Originally I had thought of going with the SXGA screen, but I really didn't need the extra screen realistate. I know there are many TP users who like the higher resolutions, but for word processessing and web surfing, XGA works fine.

I'm in the UK and we don't have an SXGA option - it's either XGA or SXGA+ (1400x1050) on both 14 and 15 inch screens, so SXGA+ was a step too far.
I know the overall size of the machine isn't that much different, but 15" machines do look a bit out of place in meeting etc, especially when a lot of have little Sony or Dell notebooks.
The ultimate decider for me was the thought that I could always go up in size by adding an external screen of whatever size I liked at home/office, but once I bought the 15" screen, I couldn't then go down in size! We don't have the 30 day return right in the UK, so I needed to get this right straight off.

14" SXGA+ is a great combination. Screen real estate allows me enough freedom to open many windows at a time: code, browse, read docs, all at a time before you run out of screen space!
The extra $$$s are really worth it for me.
IBM T43 2686-E7U 14.1" SXGA+, 1.86GHz, 1.5GB, Hitachi 7K100 80GB @7200, DVD-RW, Intel 2915ABG
It is the sweet, simple things of life which are the real ones after all.
