Internal Multi-burner DVDRW is *VERY* expensive!

#1 Post by TonyJZX » Tue May 02, 2006 9:12 pm

I'm looking after a small fleet of T40s around 3 yrs old.

They have ROMS or Combo drives.

Some wanted to upgrade to DVD burners.

The price from IBM where I am is about USD$920.

Of course one can get a new laptop for that much, even an IBM.

What's the go? Is it the smaller form factor?

Are you sure you are looking at the right part?

They're all around $250.

You're looking at the wrong part/price.

Shop for this:

p/n 73P3270 FRU 92P6579 Model #73P3342 ThinkPad Multi-Burner Plus Ultrabay Slim Drive

There's a new "Super Multiburner" which does DVD-RAM and dual-layer DVDs (40Y8622). Overkill, probably. The Multiburner Plus is a good reliable upgrade. Or, if you want to economize, tell them to tough it out with their current drives, and get an USB DVD burner or two that stays in the office. How many of your TP users need to burn DVD-R's on the road?
2668-75U T43, 2GB RAM, 2nd hand NMB kybd, Dock II, spare Mini-Dock, and spare Port Replicators. Wacom BT tablet. Ultrabay 2nd HDD.
2672-KBU X32, 1.5GB RAM, 7200 rpm TravelStar HDD.

FWIW..........I've been looking for a dvd multburner for my T40 and have realized that there are very few to none for sale! The burners on Ebay are at $200 or more. It's a shame there is no demand or should I say, no supply for these.

Exact reason why I would go with an external burner without hesitation...if I needed to burn something in an emergency, I doubt it'd be DVD sized, so the combo drive would be sufficient. As was said before, it's far more economical.

I think the reason you're getting wierd prices is that they're not selling 73p3294 anymore. I'd ask if the newer drives for hte T43 will work in a T40. Plenty of those around.

the ultra slim drives for the T43 and T60 will work with T4x line. I've seen a T43 and T41 use a T60 multi-burner.

Are you saying ANY drive for the T43 and T60 will fit a T40?? That opens up the possibilities a little bit.....
