CPU Overheating when screensaver is on? help!

#1 Post by spenceuiuc » Wed May 03, 2006 9:41 am

I have a T41 1.6 Banias. I use nhc and when it goes into screensaver for a bit, the CPU temp warning is coming up nearly ever time with nhc , and the air from the fan is rather hot. On all normal occassions, it runs around 35-40C--- it's getting up to ~80-90C but only when screensaver is on. Any ideas?

Hi,

Even if your CPU is full loaded (which screen saver are you using ?, some screen savers are very CPU intensive) the temp (above 80 C) is high for your processor... You will have to do the usual things to get it down a bit :

- Remount the HSF Fan with a better thermal compound
- Undervolt the processor with NHC or similar
- Clean up dust in the FAN exhausts
- Make sure you are not blocking the air vents
- ...

Failing those, your fan could be broken or disconnected, or the temp sensors could be failing... do you hear your FAN increasing noise as the proc gets hotter ?

Unfortunately, this is typical behaviour.

The HSF for the CPU also cools the GPU, so when you have a graphics intensive game/screensaver/etc. you are pushing both of them HARD. The small HSF in the T4x series just can't dissipate the heat fast enough.

My 2.1 Dothan is undervolted SIGNIFICANTLY and when my OpenGL screensaver comes up and pushes both the CPU and the ATI 9600 Pro I hit temps in the low 90s.

Only advice is to pick a less demanding screensaver.

Consider disabling the screensaver. I don't use them - I just allow the monitor to turn off after a specified period. Works very well.

Try changing the screen saver to the default xp screen saver a give it a try

Also some" FREE" screen savers come with load of spyware another thing is update both the antivirus and the anti spyware and scan your lappy.

Keep us posted!

I agree with JD. LCDs do not need screen savers. They will not burn in like CRT.

The best way to increase backlight life is just to set the power management so that the monitor will turn off according to your preferred time.

Different screensaver? :D Seriously though, there's this funny paradox with laptops. I like pretty pictures, too, and often just "blank" my screen at work with a screensaver ... but power profiles can be set to turn OFF the screen after x minutes to save the backlight,... and a screensaver might still be chugging away, heating the CPU/GPU all the while. I've had to retrain myself to use SCRNSAVE.SCR for my default screensaver, and then use a shortcut to lock* my laptop at work.

Sometimes the prettiest ones are more trouble than they're worth.
