Noise problem of Brand New super multi DVD Burner(curved bez
I got new super-multi DVD burner directly from Lenovo today after waiting about a month for its delivery.
But I'm not satisfied with this burner.
My old Multi-plus DVD burner(Mashita UJ822) was very calm, so when DVD was playing in it, other people couldn't notice if the burner was working.
But this brand new super multi burner (Mashita UJ842)is much much noisier than the Multi-plus one. I cannot bear it... I am considering to return it because of its noise problem.
I am wondering if it is the problem of my burner only or a general problem of all the Lenovo Supermulti DVD burner (mashita UJ842 model).
Any ideas, friends?

I suspect it isn't a problem with "new" Lenovo burners vs. the "old" IBM ones...they are made pretty much the same anyway.beingblue2068 wrote:I got new super-multi DVD burner directly from Lenovo today after waiting about a month for its delivery.

What does the noise sound like? Is it like a piece of paper hitting/brushing a solid object periodically or is it just constant?

I'm not talking about IBM vs. Lenovo thing.
It is just about difference betwen different models.
UJ822 is the best of all that I have ever used.
It is very calm and no noise at all when it works. I was so surpriseed when I first used the burner. It was totally different from all other burners (whether they were for desktop or notebook) that I had used before.
UJ842 is the same noise problem that all other burners except UJ822 had.
There is a constant noise, sounds like ing................................... I hate it. It is so bad that when I play DVD, I cannot even hear the notorious and unbearable noise coming out of my T43p's and T43's cooling fans.

This happens when you try to read other optical media, like CDs, as well?
You could try calling them and asking them to send you another drive.

Solved!
Thanks for all of your replies.
I returned the noisy one a few days ago, and got a new one today.
This one has exactly the same quality that my multiburner Plus (UJ822S) has... Quite, Stable, and reliable. It doesn't have a noise problem at all. It is so quite when playing DVDs and CDs. I guess the returned one was a defective product...

I paid 220 bucks plus tax. It was education-discount price.

That also slows down the transfer rate of data to and from the drive; in this case, the drive had some anomaly that was hadware related that made noise.gunston wrote:go into the BIOS mode.
set your CD-rom run speed to "silent"
it will runs just like normal and reduce the noise to nearly 0% when reading cd.

Seasons greetings everyone!
I am considering upgrading my T42 (which only has a CD-writer/DVD-reader) with an internal DVD-writer, and in particular I have been looking at the "ThinkPad Super Multi-Burner Ultrabay Slim Drive" (with Curved Bezel), IBM P/N 40Y8622. Data for this unit is at http://www5.pc.ibm.com/europe/products. ... enDocument and according to http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... MIGR-63680 this drive is usable for my T42 (model 2373-N1G). Note that this drive is significantly faster than the first Multi-Burner that was offered by IBM.
But! I have only seen one single case of user feedback, discussing this drive's (40Y8622) very noisy behaviour - at least in one case. So what I wonder is this: What are the experiency by other users of this drive? Is it worth buying, or is it actually too noisy? Also, does anyone have any experience with the actual quality of ths CD's and DVD's it writes; can they be read elsewhere etc.?
The drive is pretty expensive, here in Denmark where I live, but still I would like to upgrade my T42 to have (internal) DVD-writing capabilities, provided of course the drive is usable, and not the least if it is recommended by users who know of its actual "real-life" performance.
Thank you in advance for any "critical user feedback"!
Kind regards,
- and of course: Happy New Year!
