Battery In or Out while using AC adaptor on X60

#1 Post by wildzx » Wed May 03, 2006 11:33 pm

Most of the time i use the AC adaptor while using my x60, now is it recomended to remove the battery while on AC power or will it make no difference ( i know IBM employs over charge protection but still.......) Will removing the battery increase the life length of the battery? thanks
I will be using the my 4 Cell battery when travelling.....but not at home or work..

There are all kinds of power profile settings you can use to manage this. (Power Manager->Battery Information->Battery Maintenance)

Bottom line is that keeping your LiIon battery at 100% or 0% can hurt the longevity (there is a lot of conflicting data in this area because people get confused between different battery types, and even the same battery type may have different kinds of protection circuits).

The default AC configuration will let the battery run down to around 96% and then charge it up again -- trying to achieve a balance between battery longevity and the "oh crap I need to leave but my battery isn't full" scenario. There is another option that is supposedly adaptive to your usage profile, but they don't go into details. I'm comfortable letting the software handle this, but you can set your own limits if you like. As far as I can tell, setting a threshold of 0% is pretty much the same as taking the battery out while on AC. I'd choose this over physically taking the battery out to protect against brown-outs, etc.

I usually take the battery out while on AC. However, there are 3 disadvantages; 1) if power is out, the X60 turns off. 2) the bottom of x60 is exposed. not sure if it's vulnerable to dust and rust. 3) x60 does not have rubber leg on the bottom right! It's on the battery itself which means that without battery the X60 will tilt. (I heard that X60s does not have this problem)

From my experience, my battery life is worst when I keep it attached all the time but I don't have a scientific proof.
