Best way to preserve never used battery?

#1 Post by alpuzz » Thu May 04, 2006 1:22 pm

Hello,

Long story short, I placed a call for onsite service on my T43, and the tech didn't show up on the day he was supposed to be here. In compensation for my inconvenience, IBM gave me a choice of extra memory, a battery, or a carrying case. I already have 1.5 gigs of ram, and I like my case, so I opted for the battery.

My current battery is almost a year old. Though it's degraded a little, it's still fine. So, what should I do with the new battery? Is it best not to charge it, and just leave it in storage until I need it? If so, what kind of shelf life can I expect it to have?

Thanks,
--Al

I think it is good for your now battery,if you can use it one time for every month.

I read that for lithium ion batteries, the best is to store them with a 40% charge. This is the optimal number for long shelf life. I also, since I read that, keep my laptop's working battery at about 40% when I am working at home, and the laptop is connected to the electricity.

My battery health say - Full capacity 44.18 Wh. Design capacity 47.52 Wh. Cycle count 35. First use date 2005-03.

That's what I know. :|

i know it sounds creepy but it seems the best way is to have it as said with abit less than 40% and in a fridge!

not kidding but yes, fridge. you wrap it in paper and then in a zipping plastic bag. seems to be the best way, i was surprised as well, but there lies my two other batteries for 6 months now (change in job so no more travelling so often)

but not freezer!!!!!

yep, 40% in the fridge. If you can't do a fridge, just try to keep it out of heat and moisture. Perhaps a basement if you have one.

What dorin wrote is basically what I have read over the years, so I agree with him.
