If you can help me with this you are Good!..
Hi fellow Thinkpad owners, I have an X31 Model 2673. I have had it for 6 months and from the start I have had trouble when booting, I get to the desktop sometimes even can start an program then it freezes and the most weird thing it doesnt happen all the time! .
But it happens more on battery power then it happens 2 out of 3 times. Then I shutdown down using the power button and everything is alright.
Here is what I have done to error check.
I have run PC-Doctor, changed the ram, new harddisk, reinstalled Windows tvo times also ran almost all scanning programs I have laid my hands on. All for nothing.
Even taken out the Wireless Lan card same story always.
I never get an blue screen or any error window and when I boot succesfully up after freeze, windows does not say it has recovered from an serious error.
So if anyone has an idea for me to try, then plz speak up.
Best regards all

What OS are you running? It sounds like it might be overheating.
If you are running XP, or Win2k (I think), you can try using MobileMeter to watch for temp spikes prior to it locking up on you.

CPU problem? Marginal Vcore voltage?
Perhaps try running Prime95's "Torture Test" to see if it turns up any problems.

My vote would be for overheating!Gustavo wrote:So if anyone has an idea for me to try, then plz speak up.
I'm typing this on an X31 and it's a smooth running little machine.
Check the fan.

No I havent played with Vcore in the past, I lowered it to almost the lowest settings recommended (info found on this forum and used NHC to lower the Vcore) and somehow that works well, it has stopped freezing on me. Maybee the problem was overheating due too high Vcore but I find that strange considering I had factory settings for it.
But with lowered core its more stable I guess, it could also be that the battery is faulty somehow though its unlikely it says 13% wear level in battery info in NHC. Besides it sometimes did freeze while booting from AC power so the battery I think is not the culprit.
Anyways its still running stable now after many reboots and standby/resumes so I am very glad, I was going to sent it in for repairs but that can wait now

Interesting. That's exactly opposite of what I would have expected. When you originally described your problem as being more likely to occur when operating on battery, I immediately thought of the processor SpeedStep function using a low value of Vcore and clock rate when the processor is at a low load. I thought perhaps it was using a Vcore value that was too small and thus leading to instability. But you found the opposite to be true. That's one that I can't explain. But hey, if it works don't knock it!
Well I started having freezing problems again. So I gave up and sent the machine too IBM service center. They replaced the motherboard and I got it back within 2 weeks. I works as an charm now.
So it must have been something faulty in the motherboard.
Only bad thing is that the post office broke my machine screen locking loops both off them. Well I can live without them.
Cheers all..

Bummer!
After only tvo days off use, it broke down again! . Now it wont boot it stops at the moment I push the powerbutton it blinks the green lights and the fan kicks in for 1 second then it repeats this process again and again and I cant stop it without pulling the battery or powerplug.
So its back to service again.

Got it from service today
brand new system board again.
Hopefully this one will be better than the last one..........
Got no real answer from service what the error was so I cant comment on that.
