Hello everyone, Chad here...
Hiya, just got off the phone with draco. Im working on his Mirror Black lid today. Started stripping it with special powder coating stripper. It has been soaking for about an hour-hour and a half now. Then I will sandblast it, but a little differently than how I did the orange one. That orange lid was just horrible for me, and I still feel bad about it. More on that later...I have an idea to fix that for him.
So I should have this all stripped down very nicely today, and hopefully powder coated today as well. Just FYI, I really dont get into these forums much....im always very busy with a million things, so best way to get a hold of me is to just call my cell. # is on my site. I try to spend as much time with my wife as I can, because she is pregnant with our first child and I try to support her as much as I can. More updates hopefully later, and I am going to try to take pics of the progress. Thanks!

Thanks everyone!
Ill tell you what....sure are a lot of nice people around here in this forum! Thanks for all of the great wishes. Dracos lid is definitely progressing. I have DEFINITELY had a learning curve on doing these, on the prepping them that is. I have successfully found a way to safely strip all of the black rubberized coating off safely. It is going to turn out great. Oh, and I have been taking pics of the progress thus far, so you all will be able to get a nice visual on how all of this works. I even took a video of me sandblasting. More to follow later!

Chad, after you'ver perfected the process, I'd be happy to send you the T40 lid from my machine for a redo. Since I bought the spare lid on eBay for the first go-around, I do have a nice clean one for a second try.
By the way, lot's of positive comments on the yellow, even with the leather texture...

P.S. Congrats on the future child, but you're about to have even less "free" time.

OK! Good news....
My lid is done and I should have it in my hands on Tuesday!
He has perfected the process and should be able to make some sweet covers!
Like anything else, imperfections are possible and mine had a "dot" almost in the center of the lid ( I have not seen it, yet) but it should be ok (hard to see). From what Chad mentioned, sometimes this happens and it is a "fluke" of the powder-coating process(IMHO, maybe a piece of plastic that did not "process" properly when manufactured!!?)
Anyways, he will post a link once he uploads the pics! I will start a new thread once I have mine done........I was in no hurry, but knowing that it is done, NOW I can't wait....

Perfection.
Well I have certainly perfected this!! I am now confident that I have figured these covers out a great deal. I finished up Dracos today, and it turned out great! Underclocker, please dont send me anything yet. I have something up my sleeve. So here are some pics to look at. Please note: all of the little white specs that you see is just dust. These pics really dont do the cover justice. You have to see it in person to get the real effect.underclocker wrote:

So, who is next? I want someone to get a textured color. I think Silver Vein would look super hot, and its textured, so it WOULD NOT SCRATCH. Very cool looking....very uniuqe, and very durable. Well let me know!

Replacement
I have a brand new lid that I have Powder Coated in Gloss Yellow here for you ready to go. Let me know when I can send it to you, so you can send me the original one, and maybe even your other extra one that you have. This Yellow cover that I have is just about perfect. I am extremely pleased with how it turned out.....nothing like the one you currently have. Let me know!underclocker wrote:Chad, after you'ver perfected the process, I'd be happy to send you the T40 lid from my machine for a redo. Re: Perfection.
Hi underclocker...I do still have this Gloss Yellow IBM Cover that I wanted to trade out with you for the first one I did. Please let me know if you are still interested in doing this.metalfaceplates.com wrote:Well I have certainly perfected this!! I am now confident that I have figured these covers out a great deal. Wow, I remember seeing this thread last year with it was just the orange lid ... the piano black lid is incredible! Will have to consider an upgrade to my 11/2005 T43. Do we know, are replacement lids and "IBM Thinkpad" stickers (not the new "Thinkpad" ones) still readily available?

If you get the Lid from IBM.com (or anyone else that sells the part from IBM) the sticker will be in the box. There is an eBay member located in China that sells the stickers as well...davidspalding wrote:Wow, I remember seeing this thread last year with it was just the orange lid ... the piano black lid is incredible! As far as the lid, I purchased a NEW ONE...to prep it ,it is going to get all the coating OFF, so I think it might be better to get a used one. In my case it was more cost effective to purchase the new lid...
I have been thinking of getting the X60T done as well, but had no time to research the material used on the lid...
