#1 Post by zahir » Sat May 06, 2006 7:07 am

I'd like to upgrade my laptop... the config is given in my signature. What do you guys recommend?

I'd put in a Pentium M cpu first.

I'm not sure the maximum, but probably the 400MHz bus Dothan 2.1.

I started with the Celeron 1.3 in my R51 and popped in a Pentium M (Banias) 1.5. This increased the performance and battery life noticeably.

I think there is at least one Pentium M 1.5 in the marketplace section of this forum for $45 shipped.

No issue with cooling, booting, suspend or hibernation - it's been nearly a year.

Regarding memory, fast HD, BlueTooth, fairly straight forward and discussed everywhere on this board.

Good luck.

I spoke to my dealer and no where did he mention a processor switch but since you've mentioned it now, i'll look into it
he suggested a ram upgrade to 1 gb and HDD upgrade to 100gb. Only thing that disappoints me is that tho the laptop is barely 2 months old, it came with DDR SDRAM and not DDR2 ram.....

Your R51 might be only 2 months old, but R51's have been available since April 2004 - over 2 years ago!!!

The R52 is newer and uses DDR-2 memory, but even the R52's were released over 1 year ago.

With a Pentium M processor and a faster hard drive and you should be happy.

Upgrading the CPU should be sufficient for now. If you're gonna upgrade the CPU and RAM and HDD you might consider getting an entirely new notebook instead, then you could get DDR2 RAM and other goodies.
