External UltrayBay??

#1 Post by sbddude » Sat May 06, 2006 2:04 pm

Can I buy an external ultrabay? Perhaps something that plugs into USB or PCMCIA and lets me attach an ultrabay device??

I believe a dock includes an Ultrabay slot. I am not aware of an Ultrabay only box. I could be wrong though.

I could swear I've seen some that plug into the PCMCIA slot around. But I don't know if they were ever made for the ultrabay slim

I dont belive there is a USB device to setup the ultra bay connector, but you can pretty much hook up anything via USB. You can hook up a bare hard drive or CD drive via usb. What are you trying to connect?

It's called the Portable Drive Bay 2000, and it takes the thicker UltraBay 2000 drives from the T2x/T3x (not the thinner T4x UltraBay Slim); however, OPTICAL drives from the T4x UltraBay Slim can be used in the Portable Drive Bay 2000 with a "ThinkPad Slim Drive Adpater for UltraBay 2000" (only for optical drives, you'll need an UltraBay 2000 adapter for hard disks).

Leave it to Edward Mendelson to know the answer!
I'm glad I left the caveat in my post.
Now why didn't I think of searching wikipedia.org?

I even HAVE one...! I bought it to use it as an external CD drive in order to install Linux from it to a hard disk in the 2nd hard drive adapter - and then discovered that Ubuntu Linux 5.04 couldn't install from something as exotic as the Portable Drive Bay. So I ended up buying a USB CD drive after all (and then I bought a Dock II and saved myself a great deal of trouble).

Because the correct place to search would have been ThinkWiki and not Wikipedia.

Besides, we got the correct information in the end anyway from Mr.Mendelson. :)

I met someone who looks a lot like you.
She does the things you do.
But she is an IBM.

I thought ThinkWiki was a subset of Wikipedia. After a quick look just now, it seems that that may not be the case. It's good you cleared up my faux pas. I have seen the light........
