windows vista...goodbye x30-x32

#1 Post by boon » Sun May 07, 2006 4:09 pm

after checking the req for windows vista, seems like the x30-x32 don't really meet the software requirement for windows vista, which is sad that i was planning to get the series as they are pretty much the best laptop to me....

The X30 and X31 are Vista Capable.

You simply won't be able to use the Aero Glass GUI.

Yea - its pretty much a graphical limitation - not much else.

Personally - I can do w/o cool transition, clear affects on a laptop.

Just out of curiousity, what does everyone see as the compelling reason to upgrade to Vista? I've looked through the list of features and didn't see anything that would cause me to run out and buy it - am I missing something? From 3.1 -> 95 -> 98 -> XP, I was a pretty avid upgrader, and each one of those seemed like a signficant advance over the previous OS. This one I'm pretty lukewarm about so far (particularly if there is any performance tradeoff).

They've rebuilt significant portions of the networking, audio, scheduling, and memory managment portions of the kernel.

Along with adding the support for rich metadata.

Vista is going to be like XP, when it first came out we didn't see why it was better than Windows 2000, but after time we grew to love it. I love xp sp2, and I look forward to installing Vista the day lenovo makes a software installer that is compatible.

There aren't as many new features as one would hope; the majority of the "Cool" features (WinFS, new scripting console, etc) got axed because they were either only delaying Vista, which has its own fair share of delays, or getting to huge in terms of the resources they used. The Memory management has the feature whereby you can plug in a USB stick and have it act "kinda" like RAM; I say kinda because the specs state that the actual performance will be somewhere between that of a RAM range and HDD page file. It is also possible to mount a flash drive in such a manner as to increase your boot times significantly, some makers have already said they are looking into internalizing this and putting in a USB-Flash system inside their laptop just for that purpose.

It wouldn't be bad to increase boot times like that. :)

I've run Vista Beta 2 on my X32 with excellent results. It was a bit slower than XP, but then this is beta software and lacks the best driver support. I just swapped back to my Vista drive and found that there is now a GPU driver for the old ATI mobility that was not there when I first installed it. Upgrading the driver gave a real performance boost to the entire system, not just screen draws, which were already fine.

Hibernation is much faster in Vista, and while I cannot use the Aero glass interface, I honestly don't consider that much of a loss. In Vista I turned all of the eye-candy off anyway and set it to look as much like Windows 2000 as I could. In fact, even when I use the X32 in Windows XP as I usually do, I have it set to the "Windows Classic" theme without the ugly XP eye-candy.

I would dare say that our X3x machines have a fair bit of life in them yet.

I wonder how you have managed to get Vista running on a X31/X32. I tried with the final Vista RTM version on my X31 (1.5GB RAM) but after booting from hdd, I got a fatal error "Unknown error occurred, click OK to reboot" after the Vista desktop booted (almost). I did a clean install from scratch (no underlying XP).

Any help?
Cheers,

I didn't do anything special, just booted from the install DVD in the ultrabase and installed Vista. Everything just worked.

X60 should do AeroGlass just fine. I use it on my Toshiba Portege and its got the exact same GMA950 controller and an even slower CoreDuo (T2300E).

Why does it seem like the majority of laptops phased out better video chips than these intel stuff?

I feel like it's a bad idea to buy any x-series or similar form factor laptop until Vista hits mainstream, and they start putting in some decent graphics hardware.

This way, while everyone runs Vista, I can run Beryl (http://www.beryl-project.org/features.php), and FEAR.
