Seagate Momentus HDD Acoustics in R31

#1 Post by danieldavid » Mon May 08, 2006 6:12 am

Just installed a Seagate Momentus 5400 40GB HDD (Model ST94813A) to replace an aging Hitachi Travelstar DK23DA-20F that was starting to show bad sectors in my R31 2656-77U .

The new HDD is about 20% faster, however compared to the old Travelstar it makes more noise when idle (sounds like a small fan), and has some vibrations that can be felt in the front left corner. These usually disappear once the machine is warm.

Has anyone had similar experiences?

Can anyone recommend a quieter drive for the R31 - I was considering the Samsung MP0402H?

Thanks,
Daniel

Your problem is kind of strange. I had replaced my orginal Hitachi drive with a Seagate ST92011A and had no problems (But this drive is only 20gb) and was one of the first 5400rpm drives. But maybe a new Hitachi drive is in order. I replaced the Seagate with a HTS548030M9AT00. Its been in my R31 for almost 2 years with no problems. No noise or vibrations. But I do notice that it runs a lot hotter than the slower drives.

Hope this helps - Storage_man

Thanks storage_man for your comments.

Well, perhaps I should make it clear that the vibrations are very faint, and can only be felt when touching or holding the front left corner of the R31. As to the noise, the new Seagate ST94813A can only be heard in a very quiet room, and it seems to run somewhat cooler than the original Hitachi DK23DA-20F.

Nevertheless, I'd like to try a different HDD, as I love the R31's silence when in the lowest power mode.
