replacement of new keyboard under warranty

#1 Post by sm56 » Mon May 08, 2006 10:56 am

Hi,
has anyone tried to change the keyboard during the first year?
I have this new German keyboard on the T43 and would like a local one. I just want a regular change without performing "a coffee spill" or "breaking something" to make it look necessary... :?
Thanks.

Call IBM, explain and they will send you a new keyboard in one day. (here in Holland it is).

I am pretty sure that Lenovo will only send you a German keyboard as a replacement under warranty service. You can buy the keyboard of your choice from them for under $50 US. I think I have seen prices between $35 - $45 US.

Here is a page with all the keyboards available. Note that keyboards are considered Consumer Replaceable Units. You won't void your warranty by changing one out (from what I have heard).

that was fast, thanks.

Actually, I talked to Lenovo operator and she said changing one into a local version would not be a problem. After awhile I got an apologizing email taht Lenovo would refuse to do it.
I want to know of others experiences / knowledge of IBM policy before I push it futrher...
So in Holland they do it seamlessly?

Getting a new keyboard under warranty with IBM/Lenovo has been and currently is very easy, but you are only entitled to the same style of keyboard you have now. They may let you choose between Alps, Chicony, or NMB, if available for your particular machine, but I would not expect them to let you change to a different language under warranty.

For warranty replacement, you just have to call and tell them you have a problem with your keyboard and they will send you a replacement of the original language keyboard.

Of course, you can always purchase a new keyboard of any style you want and then that keyboard will be warrantied and can be replaced under warranty in the future.

Likewise, if you have a 40 gig 5400 rpm disk drive that came with your machine and it fails, you get a 40 gig 5400 rpm replacement under warranty. If you want a 60 gig 7200 rpm drive, you have to buy it.

For hard drive replacement, do you send back the old one first?

I think they always ask for the old one.

No, with most customer replaceable parts where IBM actually wants the old part, you have about 30 days to return it. Otherwise, they send a warning with more time, then invoice you.

Old hard drives must be returned, keyboards, almost never.

His question was about the HD not the keyboard.

Yes they will ask for it within 30 days the date they send you the new one
