T42, USB2 not being recognized...
OK, so I've got a T42 (2378-FVU) with 2 USB ports. Both are, allegedly, USB2. I've also got a HP scanner (4850) with which I want to scan old photos at high resolution, which means lots of data.
Here's the problem: whne I plug the scanner in, I get a little popup telling me that I'd get better performance if I plugged the USB device into a USB 2 port (duh...). It then shows me the USB 2 controller. Ok... easy, right? Not so much. Here's what I've done:
1) Checked cables to make sure they're correct. Both are reputed to be useable with USB 2 ports.
2) In Device Manager, disabled (and, once, uninstalled) all of the USB Univesal Host Controllers (there are for some reason) leaving only the USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controllers and associated USB Root Hubs. This left me with a system that claimed it had no USB ports (nothing connected to them was detected).
3) Tried both ports.
All USB 2 devices, not just the scanner, cause this symptom.
System is T42 2378-FVU, Windows XP SP2. All current updates both via Windows Update and the ThinkVantage Software Installer.
Ideas anyone?

Not yet. The chipset drivers are .inf files, but the drivers themselves are MSFT. And, oddly, installing the .INF files doesn't put anything on my drive aside from a readme. But, I did discover other versions of the INF file on the drive. I'll try that tonight.
could be mobo, but the diagnostics don't show anything, and the ports work fine in 1.1 mode - no flakiness, just that they're stuck in 1.1 land vs being recognized as 2.0.
Gott say this is REALLY annoying, esp when I look at the "Design for Windows XP" sticker and yet something pretty basic does not work.

While I wouldn't give up too quick, I think that cmarti is correct that you probably need to replace the motherboard to fix it. If your ThinkPad is out of warranty, you can buy a USB 2.0 PCMCIA card as a cheaper and easier option than replacing the motherboard.
If you search the ThinkPad T4x Series only forum for USB 2.0 or USB 1.1, you will find other users that experienced the same problem.

Hi,
I had this very similar problem on my T41 (2374-228); mine was sometimes seeing the usb 2 deivce as usb 1.1 some other times when i plugged a usb 2 device it started as usb 2 then by itself while the device was physically attached the machine (windows) unpluged the device and mounted as usb 1.1.
I called ibm, and they changed the motherboard today (wednesday); problem solved.
My guess is it is motherboard problem.
Regards
