I found these forums a few days ago - very interesting reading - I've been through the first 30 pages or so (to about Jan 15th, around the time of Yonah's release).
Now, I understand IBM's policy about FRU's and CRU's and I have searched this topic but have not found a reasonable answer. I have the Laptop in sig - T41 2373 8RG Warranty expires 31-10-2007. I want to upgrade it however. I am looking to upgrade the mini-pci wireless (CRU), RAM (CRU), HDU - now is this a CRU or FRU, it really should be a CRU - I want to put a 7200rpm drive in (very interesting threads on these at the moment) and the CPU. Now the CPU is an oddity; it is labelled as a non-serviceable FRU. So basically if the CPU fails, then you are out of luck as is it not under warranty. So basically you cannot replace it without voiding the warranty?
About replacing the CPU (I'm very experienced with computers, I build them for friends and family, overclock them, and my main desktop is custom watercooled) with either a 755 (2.0ghz Dothan, 2MB L2, 400FSB). Given the predicament we face with regards to warranty, is this viable? Have others done this. I've had practice with IBM's as I stripped down my sister's T22 when it broke out of warranty. I'm very careful and have never broken anything in any of my builds. I will use AS5 as the new thermal compound. The reason for all of this is to replace the current hot, power hungry (relatively) Banias 1.6ghz. I've read the service manual for this - it looks straightforwards as I'll need to do most of the preliminary steps to change the wireless mini-pci. IBM say you need to remove the screen for this - I don't believe you do. I looked under the keyboard and the only reason I can see mention of this is that the aerial cables *might* be mildly in the way but this may be remedied by detaching it from the m-pci card.
Do others have any comments/views? I apologise for the length of the above!
