Debadge or not to debadge?

#1 Post by eb23air » Tue May 09, 2006 5:39 pm

Hi everyone. I have a T43, and since I've been on my laptop so much since I purchased it, the Windows XP sticker badge is starting to lose its silver coating.

Has anyone debadged any of their T43s? I'm thinking about doing it, but when I debadged my old Dell, spots were left where the stickers used to be. Anyone have any pictures of their debadged Tx series laptop?

Thnaks!

Take a look in the "Pictures of your ThinkPad & desk setup" forum on here.

Cheers,

You can cleanly remove the stickers on the palm rest (Windows and Petium), but I would not try to remove the IBM label permanently fixed in the small indentation. I have removed the other stickers. I just use the sticker itself to pick up any small amount of glue remaining. Nice clean job. ... JD Hurst

i've been told to use a hairdryer to 'soften' the glue... yet to remove them yet...

The thread http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=24167 did have pics but they seem to have disappeared. Hairdryer should be fine though - I use one on books whose price stickers are old and thus very hard to cleanly remove with fingernails.

WD-40 is great removing the glue and it will not damage the plastic.

a fingernail and some prying is all ya need..

regarding the question.. by all means.. debadge.. it's your computer.. not IBM/Lenovo or Microsoft's.. IMO

yank out the ibm logo on the palm rest.. find your own nifty sticker, and cut it to shape with an exacto knife. ; ) or, yank the original sticker out whole.. lay it flat, and cut around it as a template. get crafty.

Maybe the removal of the IBM logo is a bit too far the problem is with the win xp sticker

But as you said it it his computer.

But, what is his opinion? :?

that was all just my opinion (hence the 'IMO')

i'm just spreading the gospel and helping others to take a bite out of the corporate branding that permeates our every day lives.. ; )

(yeah.. i'm a crazy sticker nazi)

my T41's logo hole has a picture of my fiance in it. I like her alot better than that RGB IBM logo.

as for the windows sticker.. definitely!!! i ripped that sucker off the first day.. just because it was irritating my palm. I don't think you'll get a shadow effect or anything on a black case. as they don't seem to fade (it could be a possibility though)

I am also a fan of the stickers i even order the centrino label and the Ati for the palm rest.

And when the label of the serial of the machine peel off i made IBM replace it.

( I like to maintain the original look on my things )

(Edit)

And the clear plates when i install the integrated bluetooth

the Windows and Intel stickers are marketing, pure and simple. The first thing to go when I unpack a new pc.

I'm not sure I'd use a hair dryer, as "cooking" the adhesive might not help. A product called Goo Gone does wonders, as does some 3M Scotch tape on some kinds of sticker adhesives. Many are designed to lift off with the badge/sticker, and I believe the "Wintel" stickers are among that lot.

As always, put the Goo remover/WD-40/whatever on a cloth then apply to the spot, never put the liquid directly on your computer. ;) Just my 2¢

While I am not recommending applying heat to remove a sticker from a laptop, I do know that this method works great for removing pinstriping from an automobile. I've done it. I used an infrared heat lamp to heat the area, and the pinstriping came off easily.

Ive found that rubbing alcohol works fine for removing that stuff and doesnt put your machine in danger (a la acetone..)

Understand that works with a lot of bumper stickers, too. Of course, a cars finish is hardier than a TP palm rest. :D

Yeah, rubbing alcohol is gentler than others. I would never use acetone or nail polish remover, as I'm not expert enough to determine which type of plastic starts to melt with the latter. I've done that. Once.

If you touch them long enough, they will ooze off.
