Just bought an R40

#1 Post by dsigma6 » Wed May 10, 2006 10:37 am

I just grabbed an R40 off ebay for $400. I probably should ask questions first, but it's a 1.2ghz pentium 4, and I can't find mention of an R40 with that speed anywhere on the internet...Can anyone fill me in? (Positive info only lol)

Got a model number?

Read the FAQ????

Possibly a mistype in the description?

As I thought, mistype in the description.

P4-M 2GHz, not a 1.2GHz.

Just be aware that all P4 equipped laptops are lapwarmers, i.e. they tend to run hot. Other than that the R40 series is supposed to be fairly reliable.

thanks for the info- i did read that they run hot since theyre p4 and not p4m...but there is still confusion- the guy ran a benchmark and showed the results to me, and it says 1.2 ghz pentium 4. either way i dont really care, but its just weird that the model doesnt match what its supposed to have...hopefully it wasnt tinkered with.

now as to running hot- does that mean this thing is going to kill itself, or does it have sufficient cooling power? wonder if i can do something to improve that.

also, im not too familiar with mini wireless cards- i believe it has the antenna installed and you have to add a card internally , or pcmcia card? it looks like one big pcmcia instead of the usual slimmer ones. eek! i guess until i figure that out ill just plug it directly in, cause it doesnt look like the regular card will fit that big opening.

Actually, it IS a P4-M, but they still tend to run hot.

The benchmark is probably reporting what Speedstep enabled speed the processor was at while running the test.

If the product description says "Wireless Upgradable" (it does) then it means that the antennae are already installed and all you need do is install a suitable WiFi card.

Watch the movie!

A 2.0GHz P4-M won't be too hot and it's reasonably fast. However, the R40's with Pentium M cpu's are preferrable - cooler, faster, longer battery life.

You could always ask the seller to cancel the deal, since there was a mistake in his ad.

Good luck.

i dont see myself returning something because it is faster than i was lead to believe!!

hopefully it works, then i will begin the tedious task of creating bootable xp cds from the hd.
