The choice of 9.5mm thick DVD burners is extremely limited. As far as as I'm aware, only M a t s u s h i t a currently makes any.

A popular alternative choice is a 12mm thick burner in an external thin line USB case. There are numerous manufactures of these drives and therefore much more price competition, and usually a better choice of features.

I'm using a Sony DVD-burner in a USB case with my T4xs and am very pleased with the results.

Cheers,

Bill

Sorry, no. Its an image from a computer store (EYO) in Australia, which was appropriate to illustrate the general concept.

Places to find suitable empty drive cases in the US have been discussed here on ThinkPad.com several times, so a searach will probably turn up further references.

For Australian readers, the link to the EYO online store page is here. One of my associates bought this exact drive from EYO to use with his T43 and is very happy with it.

Before EYO starting carrying the pre-assembled product here in Sydney, I bought a very similar case through eBay (where there was plenty of choice available) and added a 12mm Sony DVD drive purchased separately to make my own portable USB DVD burner, but if I was buying now I probably wouldn't bother putting it together myself.

Cheers,

Bill

That EYO looks good - thanks for the link, Bill :) Another thing to add to my 'to buy" list, perhaps...

Well if anyone could post a link to some U.S. available similar products, it would be most appreciated.

If you mean the external enclosure, I've been using this one for awhile and it has worked great with an NEC-ND6500 drive:

There is a new silver one for a few dollars more:

Thanks mysbca. Looks good to me. Ordered the $15 black one you linked to and got what looks to me like a pretty good deal on a NEC ND6750-A at Newegg ($69.99 w. free 3 day shipping). So if everything works out, I should have a decent slim external DVD burner for a total of about $100 (which includes the shipping charge for the $15 case and CA sales tax on both items).

The Plextor PX-608U may well be one of the best external DVD burners out there. It manages dual layer and is pretty fast, it's slim, Plextor drives have a very good reputation, and you can use the renowned Plextools with it. Plus I have read it works on USB bus power, though I find this very surprising as I can't imagine the USB port can muster enough power for DVD burning - does someone know more specifics about this drive?

It might be difficult to get in the US however - it's not listed on the Plextor US site, and it may have to be ordered from Europe. I see that Amazon.co.uk has them for £140 and will ship to the US.

Just thought I'd mention that the Nec ND-6750A DVD RW slim drive and the external USB 2.0 slim case I ordered arrived. It was pretty easy to put the parts together and all required drivers were automatically loaded by XP when I plugged in in to a powered USB 2.0 hub. It is working GREAT! This drive is virtually silent. So far to test it out, I have played some commercially produced movies and recorded one DVD+R. Nero reported it was only writing at 8x but the 4 gigs of data I was writing was completed in about 7 minutes. I don't know if that is considered slow or not but it's good enough for me and I am very happy with this compact and portable setup which only cost about $98 delivered.

Edit: Got the newer version of Nero and now it is indicating it will write to DVD+R at 16x.

Does anyone know if this enclosure can be used with the CD-RW/DVD that came with my thinkpad?

If your thinkpad uses the ultrabay 2000 type of ultrabay, the answer is yes but you wouldn't need it because the bare drive would also fit directly in the Ultrabay 2000 bay of your TP which would be even better.

If you TP is a newer one that has the slimmer Ultrabay Slim type of bay, then your ultrabay slim burner would not fit correctly in this external enclosure.

The link in Smackdown66's post is wrong.

I just did a quick search on eBay and found a Dynex slim external DVD/CDRW for around $35. Anybody has any experience with it?

Does anyone here know if those Centrix enclosures you refer to are compatible with the IBM Ultrabay 2000 Multiburner? Because I've been trying to get it to work in the IBM Portable Drive, but I can't get it to work. It seems like the IBM Portable Drive Bay only works with a CD-ROM device inserted...
