No T22 sound output any more - any known HW problems?

#1 Post by jkn » Thu May 11, 2006 7:44 am

Hello all
The sound system on my T22 appears t have gone west. I didn't notice for a while as I dual-boot Linux and Windows, and on Linux (my main OS) I had previously turned the KDE SW sound system off to run a particular application. Also, I was running the T22 on a new Dock station, and thought that perhaps the was doing something to the sound which I'd need to look at.

Anyway, I've just reverted to running the T22 on its standard mains adapter, without the Dock. Under both Windows and Linux there is no sound coming out, regardless of the volume setting etc. I've plugged headphones in as well with no result. The Windows system manager seems to think that all is well.

I'm pretty good technically (Embedded electronics Engineer by profession) and have half a mind to open the thing up and have a look. I appreciate that there's a risk in this...

... are there any well-known faults that might cause this sort of thing? I'm thinking of things liked a cracked PCB trace, or a connector prone to trouble, something like that.

Thanks for any suggestions

Jon N

Have you checked the volume control buttons on the keyboard? You didn't state whether or not you had tried it.

gee, how embarrassing is that?!

Yes, it looks like me (or maybe some else) had turned the sound off/down. I never touch those buttons & had forgotten about them ... although only the other day I remember thinking about checking Linux support for the 'Thinkpad' button.

Maybe I did it without realising when I was altering the sound system as mentioned previously.

Thanks very much - you've saved me a possible major waste of time and effort...

Cheers
Jon N

No problem. Sometimes it is the things that are right in front of you. We always tend to make things more complicated than they really are.
