Initial Impressions with T60p (upgraded from T40p)

#1 Post by freakwave » Thu May 11, 2006 11:49 am

Hi all,

I just want to share some experiences I made in the very short time with my T60p (2007 2GHz 15 UXGA) Model. I am migrating from my lovely T40p with 14" SXGA+ display.

1. Display
I had some problems in the beginning. The IPS displays always have this crystal effect. So from a pure reading perspective I prefer the non IPS display from my T40p. The colors are awesome, as well as the brightness of the screen. I am using Liquidview now and increase all the fonts by 10 percent.

2. Performance
Here it really depends. My T40p is already a super fast machine. So if you compare normal office usage, you will find no difference at all!!!!
Considering that my T40p is 3 years old, that’s pretty impressive for the old machine. But what do we compare here, if WinWord starts in
1.5 or 1.4 seconds.
Now some really challenge: I am using vmware with 1.4GBytes of Memory assignment. In the vmware I am running Oracle, Jboss and eclipse. When eclipse starts, my project loads about 10000 objects into memory. Here the new machine is impressive. Starting eclipse + loading the object is done in half of the time (1 minute compared to 2 minutes). I have to mention that this is not a complete fair comparison, since my T40p has using a 100GBytes 5400rpm Seagate HD as second hard drive and the T60p is using a second 100GBytes 7200 Hitachi drive.

3. Build quality
I have to say it is better than the T40p. The old machines case is not very stiff. The palm rest has more flex than the T60p. First thing I did on my T40p was taping the battery, the keyboard, the palm rests so it felt stiffer. (I did not put the tape outside ;-)
The only thing that I do not like with the T60p is that the palm rest on the right hand side gets quite warm due to the higher temp of the 100Gig drive compared to the 60Gig in the old machine (both are 7200rpm)

4. Battery life
Do not know yet, according to battery meter, I get about 3 hours with the 6cell, which is fine with me; I have a second 9 cell battery for travel.

5. Size
Does it really matter? Well, I think the 14" model is really awesome when it comes to portability. I really had no preferences and could not make a decision for weeks which size to get. I said, ok lets try the bigger screen, the weight difference is only 300 grams. I still think I can live with the bigger case, but I still love my super slim T40p, it is so much nicer.

Now since I still love my T40p so much you will ask why did I upgrade at all?
The main reason was these really annoying freezes with my T40p. It is doing this at least twice a day. I hope the T60p does not have this problem. I will call IBM support since the T40p is still under warranty. But the already exchanged the motherboard because the graphic chip died.

Just one more thing in regards to thinkpads.
I think the IBM Service rocks. I had 2 incidents, and each time somebody stood at my desk the next day even though my machine warranty is not on site repair. It can not be better!!!! (They also replaced my battery after 14 months)
I hope this never changes. For the new machine I upgraded to 3 years on site, just in case.
