x21 weird problems

Sometimes I hear the fan goes "dut, dut, dut". At first I thought it was my crappy hard drive but since I now have a brand new one installed and I still hear this noise I confirmed that it's the fan. Then there are also other noises. Sometimes the laptop would let out a long beep for no reason.


What could be wrong with it? Oh and how do I stop the siren from going off when the battery is at 0%?

You can change the setting at the power manager. Uncheck the 2 battery alarm boxes on the right. And change the word at the notify with: to message. Action: no action if you do not want it to hibernate.

As for your fan, it might be dusty.

Why your thinkpad gave out a long beep? Sighing? * Just joking*

i have a X21 too and also get the "dut dut dut" sometimes.
Usually its when the CPU temp is low and the fan is off or running slow.

I think the "dut dut dut" is referred to as the "pulsing problem" (but i might be wrong here) and thinkwiki.org says the following about it:

"The pulsing seems to be triggered by the embedded controller when it monitors the fan speed and adjusts the fan control accordingly every few seconds.
For some models, IBM released an update to the embedded controller program that seems to at least partially solve this problem."

I updated my embedded controller program and still get it, but you might give it a try.

Since there seems to be no solution the only thing i can do is shut down the fan completely when the "dut dut dut" gets annoying.
When i want to do something cpu-intensive i have to restart the fan first of course.
Since im using Linux i could not tell you how to shut down the fan in Windows though, sorry.
