T40 Best TP under $500?

#1 Post by schen » Fri May 12, 2006 11:18 am

Obviously I'm talking to a somewhat bias audience here, but I figure that most of you have/do own enough other TPs to give me a good answer. I'm in the process off buying 2 notebooks for some of our friends. Based on what I've been able to read and figure out, I think a reasonably spec'd T40 under $500 would be my best bet in that price range. What do you guys think? Other options?

I've even seem some T23s priced over $400!

Absolutely, if you can find them. A huge plus is having some IBM warranty left.

As another fine option, R51's are similarly spec'd and occasionally can be found around $500, too. But T's are preferrable.

I have two T40's and two R51's, all 1.5GHz Pentium M's, all are good. R51's weight about a pound more, but do feel more solid (less screen flex) than T40's. But, T40's have nicer overall "feel" due to their weight, slimness, and higher quality top cover finish. The keyboards are identical, actually swappable. Same batteries, too.

I don't know if all the T40's have a 3-year warranty. My T42 only came with a 1-year warranty, although there were some other T42's available with the 3-year warranty (they just cost more).

warranty

The one I'm looking at has warranty till August of this year, so that's a plus. Is it possible to extend the warranty through IBM/Lenovo before it expires?

Yes, from what I've read, you can extend IBM warranty for a fee, of course. Go for it! I have a T40 with warranty until 11/06. Excellent machine. Maybe I'll sell one of my T23's?

Yes! :D

Download PDF file from following site to get the information.
http://www-1.ibm.com/services/us/index. ... s/a1001480

ThinkPads purchased after the IBM sale to Lenovo are warrantied differently. That is, the ThinkPads purchased after 1 May 2005.

For ThinkPads purchased after 1 May 2005, see this page: Warranty Service Upgrade (WSU) - Mobile Products

EDIT: For those interested, you can buy a warranty after your warranty has expired. It much better to buy before the warranty expires however.

As above, download PDF for IBM purchases (up until 1 May 2005).
IBM ServicePac for post-warranty maintenance agreement

View page below for Lenovo purchases (after 1 May 2005).
Post-warranty annual maintenance agreement (MA) - Mobile Products

There are several caveats to the above. Be sure and read the fine print.

One such caveat:
Services are available for machines normally used for business, professional, or trade purposes, rather than personal, family or household purposes.
