T30 battery for a T21?

#1 Post by clayton.bigsby » Fri May 12, 2006 6:54 pm

I went through the archives and it has been said that a T30 4400mah OEM battery would fit and work on a T21. I was looking through eBay and noticed that the T30 OEM battery is not exactly physically the same as my T21 3600mah OEM battery. The T30 battery has what looks like a couple of humps. I was wondering if this is an issue before I buy. Can anyone help me shed some light? Thanks.

It will fit, I use one on my T20 but had to add 3 pads to the existing pads to keep the note pad from rocking. The T30 battery has a much thicker pad on it.

I use the T30 batteries in my T21 and T23s, and the work perfectly. I have not had an issue with the systems rocking. The biggest difference is that the T30 battery has a notch cut out of it, which in no way effects the T2xs. I thnk that it is there to prevent someone from using a T2x battery in a T30.

IBM is selling "certified used" T23 batteries for $32.

I've ordered a 1/2 dozen and I'll let you all know their condition when they arrive. But in the past when I purchased "used" battteries from IBM the ones I received were new or as-new with 4 or 5 cycles.

Wow, that is a good price if they are pretty much guaranteed to be close to new.

P.S.
Time to update your Sig there to 3.5K+ posts.

Not quite so fortunate this time! I've only had a chance to unpack and test two of them so far.

Battery 1:
**************************** BATTERY INFORMATION *****************************
Status: Charging
Remaining percentage: 32 %
Charge completion time: 2:18
Remaining capacity: 7.36 Wh
Full charge capacity: 23.04 Wh **
Current: 1.95 A
Voltage: 12.33 V
Wattage: 24.04 W
Temperature: 26 C
Cycle count: 47 **
Manufacturer name: SANYO
Manufacture date: 2001-10-15
First used date: 2002-01
Serial number: 5533
Bar-coding number: 1Z2AM36649P
Battery name (FRU part number): IBM-02K6627
Device chemistry: Li-Ion
Design capacity: 43.20 Wh
Design voltage: 10.80 V
A 47 cycle count is fairly low, but the capacity is WAY low vs. design capacity. I'll have to exercise this one to see if it recovers a bit.

Battery 2:
**************************** BATTERY INFORMATION *****************************
Status: Charging
Charge completion time: 3:58
Remaining capacity: 0.00 Wh
Full charge capacity: 32.00 Wh
Current: 2.06 A
Voltage: 11.58 V
Wattage: 23.81 W
Temperature: 21 C
Cycle count: 9
Manufacturer name: SANYO
Manufacture date: 2003-04-25
First used date: 2003-09
Serial number: 1936
Bar-coding number: 1Z2AM7651HS
Battery name (FRU part number): IBM-02K6627
Device chemistry: Li-Ion
Design capacity: 38.88 Wh
Design voltage: 10.80 V
Now this is more like it! Not as good as some of the "as new" batteries I've received from IBM Certified Used, but 32WH full charge capacity is pretty darn good and will probably go up a bit after some use.

I'm starting to feel like Charlie Brown - "All I got was a rock".

I ordered two "certified used batteries" - one came with a capacity of 18Wh & 152 cycles, the other with 27Wh & 55 cycles.

Just so you don't feel lonely, two of the other batteries I bought had test results akin to headspace's, but the remaining two were clunkers like yours and are going back to IBM.

If your full charge is that low and it is only at 14 cycles, then you need to try to perform the reconditioning process on the battery about 2-3 times and it should restore it to where it should be.

If you have Battery Maximizer installed on a T2x, you can left click on the green battery icon, then choose "Battery Information", then "Battery Health" button. Then choose the "Battery Tips" button. From there, you can read the tips on how to recondition the battery, based on the type of battery that you have.

Talked to IBM support and was told that used batteries are only guarantied to last 60 to 90 minutes off AC power, if it makes that the battery will not be replaced. Tech said design specs don't facter into their decision to replace the battery.
