cd/dvd rom

#1 Post by sluffcard » Fri May 12, 2006 9:42 pm

I have a tp 600e 2645 4bu 400mhz proccessor with 10 gig hard drive windows xp sp2 latest bios and the order of bios start up is cd/dvd(teac dve 28e) floppy hd.

My question is why does my computer like to come close to freezing up on me when i start the computer with the cd/dvd rom in it. I had it doing it before i reinstalled windows because of a virus. However it would only work if there was a cd rom in it on starup and it would just come close to doing it again on restart. But now i cant remember what i did to get it to work the first time. Can anyone help with this issue. The only way that i can get the computer to startup without the problems is to start it up with the floppy then when in windows swapp the cd/dvd. Many thanks. :( :? :D

Can you get into the BIOS with the DVD drive in? If so, run the Test option and test the DVD drive. It could be that the DVD drive is going bad.

Do you have a floppy attached externally when you have it set to CD/Floppy/HD? It might be freezing if it doesn't find the floppy attached.

Try changing your boot order to remove the floppy and see if that makes a difference.

that made no change. I just thought about it. I aslo got a external 40 gig hard drive that i plug into my pcmcia usb 2.0 adapter my cd\dvd rom drive name changed both drive names when they where pluged in at the same time but i dont know how to change drive names. When i use diskmgmt.mcs it only shows c drive and E drive never a and b i would like to change them as well so i could make things such as bios flopys with my computer instead of someone elses computer.

One last thing, try removing the CD drive from the start up list. Just use Floppy/HD. You are right that it could be conflicting the DVD and thre external drive, but I don't think that the 600E will "see" the USB at boot (as in a bootable drive).

As for changing the drive letters: In WinXP, go to Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management then click on Disk Management, under "Storage". You can then right click any drive that you have attached and choose "Change Drive Letter and Paths..." You can then make the drive letter anything that you'd like.
