Which 1GB RAM for T42?

#1 Post by Edward Mendelson » Sun May 14, 2006 7:48 am

Can anyone suggest an *exact* part number for a 1GB RAM chip for a T42, preferably sold by someone reasonably inexpensive, such as Newegg.com?

Many thanks!

Thanks for those references - I've never regretted buying Crucial RAM, and have more or less always regretted buying everything else (the other brands sometimes come up bad; Crucial never does.)

I've bought many Kingston sticks ... and never a problem. Just my two cents.

I always had good luck with Kingston also - until a couple of months ago when I bought (direct) two 512MB sticks for my desktop machine. One was bad out of the box - an error at the same address every time I tested it, which caused lockups. They replaced it, so all's well now. But now I can't say "never had a problem with Kingston..."

Hehe, I can't say "never had a problem with Glad garbage bags," but out of hundreds (thousands?) I've used, 1 or 2 have ripped on me. YMMV, particularly if you're in a competing brand's TV ad.

According to the reviews on NewEgg.com, there are a few more T42 owners happy with that Crucial stick.

That's what I intend to buy, too.

how does one know if the ram is working? my computer recognizes it, but i don't see a difference in startup time; could that be because my HDD is only 40gb? after reading some reveiws on new egg, i'm not to sure if the ram i installed is working. is there a sure fire way of testing to see if the ram is fully functioning? am i just triipin, thinking that the ram isn't working when it really is?

Start, Run, Contol Panel, System will tell you how much memory your computer thinks you have.

Startup time isn't improved by adding memory. What gets faster are multiple applications running at the same time.

The easy way: Control Panel > System. In the default tab (General), you should see "Computer:... 1280 MB of RAM".

Also: CTRL + SHIFT + ESC to bring up Task Manager, click the Performance tab.

You want some real "subjective" tests:
  1. Logout. Then log in again. Fast?
  2. Run Word. Close. Run Outlook. Close. Run some other apps. Close them all. Now repeat, same sequence. Do the apps come up pretty quick?
  3. Logout again. Log in. Run step 2 again. Still fast? ;)
  4. Run every single Office application (or equivalent). Now open IE to CNN.COM or something. Open Media Player and play one of the tunes in Sample music. Now hit CTRL + SHIFT + ESC. How's the RAM situation? ;)

I got 2 1GB Elpida chips in tandem right now and they came brand new with IBM FRU stickers on them.
Performance has increased but my hard drive crashed big time a week or two after the upgrade...A recovery fixed my drive, but I'm still wary that the memory might have caused the problem.

You asked how you could tell that your new RAM was working, I showed you where you could verify. Look at the Performance tab. Still can't find it? Consult Windows help.

Performance tab ... Physical Memory ... Total.... I dunno what's confusing about that. If your memory isn't working, it won't show up.

Dude, are you, like, a Valley guy or something?
